Default New to Rovers, Need advice, direction, knowlege.

Hello all.

I'm a hummer guy have been for some time but as build my hummer the worse it gets a a daily driver. I started looking at Discoveries locally and for something that's 4 to 8 years old they have very good pricing IMO. Now my good friend whom is a mechanic has told me to stay away, he has repeatedly mentioned his concern with electrical demons haunting the Discovery. Now he is my good friend but I could see him getting 1 bad one in and hating them all. Im looking at 200 to 2004 and 1996 to 1999 models. I like the 03/04 best because of the headlights.

This will start out as a daily driver for a few winters and maybe the next few summers. I would then like to start letting my girlfriend use it for offroading, put some agressive tires on it, winch, lift, the typical stuff.

Is there anything to look for, stay away from? Is there a bad year? A great year? I notice all these different series like HSE, Se2, I sure I didnt nail them letters down rite but Im sure you know what I mean. Is there one certain serise to look for or not to look for.

Any help would be great!

Read though that, you will like the visibility that is offered in a Disco WAY better than a Hummer.
As far as electrical problems go, the DII is more prone to them than a DI.
Almost everything on a DII is computer controlled, so whenever a sensor gets knocked around to much it can set off a trouble light.
As far as SD, SE, SE7, SD is base model, SE is middle, HSE is top of the line and XX7 is 7 passenger.
The third row of seats is best left to children and it eats up alot of cargo room.

As far as off road goes...

I understand they do well offroad, We were at our local place in michigan and this lady in a rover asked if she could follow. She kept rite up no problem.

Do the Discoveries have front and rear lockers? Are there certain series that don't or do have these options. Do they rely on the TC or gear clutching for traction? They got SFA rite? Keep in mind Im looking at 01-04 models.

Did you watch those videos? They are all 100% stock Disco's.
They do not come with lockers from the factory, DII's use traction control.
You will need the center differential lock which was not available on DII's from 2000-2003.
Keep in mind that these trucks are full time four wheel drive and you MUST use premium gas.
You can expect 15mpg as a daily driver.

Well it all kinda depends, the 2000-mid 2001 has the nipple on the t-case just not linkage to the cabin, the mid 2001-2003 do not have and CDL anything in/on their t-cases.
So for the sake of keeping it simple I just say that non of them have it.
Am I 100% correct in saying that? No.
