Yes I know, 2 threads in one day. Sorry about that.
Anyway, to the matter at hand. I was driving today and decided to play some of my Pink Floyd CDs. The radio said that there are no available discs.
It has been doing this for the past year now, but it would fix itself after a quick off/on cycle. That didn't work this time. So I have decided that it is time for an upgrade to a modern stereo. What do you guys have? Is the sound quality as good as the factory unit? This car has the best sound system of any car I've owned so I really do not want to sacrifice sound quality. Let me hear your suggestions.
Thanks.
BTW: If anyone was wondering, my D2 has the navigation system with harman/kardon
I wouldn't change anything. What I would suggest is to add an auxiliary input. There's several different ways to do this, and there's write-ups in this forum if you search. Aux in will permit your choice of flash storage music playing device.
To actually upgrade the system, you would be replacing the pre-amp, amp, drivers/speakers, and the upgrading the acoustics. In my opinion, the speakers are the weakest point simply because they degrade the most with age and use/abuse. You could also increase the range of frequency response with better tweeters and bigger subs. But replacing all those speakers with something like Harmon Kardon/JBL, JL Audio or something is going to cost. Then to drive those new speakers, you'll probably want new amps with more headroom. Again bucks. With those upgrades, you'll have the frequency response and the SPL, but the quality will be suffering from noise in the pre-amp, and problems with the acoustics. You can fix the pre-amp issue with a new head unit, again more bucks. Fixing the acoustics with CLD tiles, CCF, and MLV also costs something.
But since you're already satisfied with the sound quality of the factory system, you should just add an aux in. If you upgrade anything, consider the acoustics since it costs the least, and provides a benefit even when you're not listening to music.
I replaced my head unit with a pioneer nex 8000 last year and swapped out the amp at the same time. I retained the original speakers (also the Harmon Kardon system).
I'm very happy with the result. In fact, we pick the d2 for road trips over my wife's lr4 because the wife and kids prefer the Nav and video provided by the nex.
Before you do anything, I would call Crutchfield and find out what is possible. The Navigation system is different than the other factory systems, if I recall. I think the aftermarket head units are not compatible with the Rover navigation. You can check with Grom and see if any of their aux modules will work.
Robert Booth and I both did surgery on our dash fascia and installed 2-din Pioneer head units. They have navigation, bluetooth, 2 usb ports, sdcard, hdmi input, aux rca inputs, 3.5mm inputs, sirius/xm input, dual-zone audio/video outputs for rear screen/headrest monitors, rear view camera input, hdradio, DVD/CD. Roberts install looks better than mine, but I am happy with mine. I kept all the factory amp, speakers, wiring, etc. just added a mono bloc amp and 10" sub for a little bump.
When you get that fault with your CD Changer take it apart and lube it. Common problem for no disk or no magazine is a sticking assembly. If you remove the cover and watch it function you'll see what I'm talking about.

I will try to lubricate it today. If that doesn't work, then I will wire in an AUX cable. The only reason why I don't like the AUX cable is that you have to plug in your phone and choose the track on it, not the head unit. And where I live, cops love to pull people over for using their phones. That double-din mod is pretty cool though. I might just do that instead of the AUX cable.
So in your car you have the ability to watch movies and listen to music. Well any phone can do that as well. But, with a bigger touch screen monitor, its cool. Well, also a tablet will do and will hold all your music too. There are ways to connect to your existing stereo. Cheers
I like the idea of the double-din. I saw some of those flip-out units too and I like those because there is no modification required.
The mac mini is cool, but I don't need all of it's features like movies and multiple monitors.
I know that I can fit an aftermarket stereo in it because I have before when this one started acting up. It was a BOSS Audio unit but I only used it for a week because it sounded so bad.
So I guess I need to look for a double-din or flip out.
Thanks everyone.
i have a spare CD changer that i removed. I was planning on keeping it in case i ever decide to revert the truck to stock but could be persuaded to part with it
