Default Newb Questions

Hello all,

New here and pondering purchasing a pre owned 2001 Disco II and was wondering what I should look for. I found a 2001 disco 2 SE7 with 60K on it and fully loaded in great shape for about $14K. Looking for something bigger and safer for the family. Are there any common problems with these vehicles that I should look out for? How in the world does that transfer case work? Looks like it has about 8 different possitions. Any great attributes to these things? Average fuel mileage with these things. Are the newer discos any better? I know its a lot of questions but I don't want to end up with something that will not meet my needs.

Thanks in advance,
Level2

Honestly, I think you could do better on the price.

Plan to spend some money when you first get one, just to fix the things that made the previous owner want to sell. Those things aren't always obvious until you've driven it for a month or so. Once you do that, then you'll have a great Rover.

Parts are more expensive than for an ordinary SUV.

If gas mileage is very important to you, then maybe you need to look for something different. I get 19 MPG on the highway in my 2003.

What do you plan to do with the Disco?
I would also say the price on that truck is way to high, of course the miles is pretty low.
If you are planning on doing alot of 4 wheeling the you want a Disco that has a locking transfer case, 99's, 2000. early 2002 as well as the 2004 have this t/case. If it is more for a family vehicle, this may not be as important.
If you have alot of questions, feel free to call me, I'd be glad to answer them for you.

That price is high. My buddy just wrapped up a search for an '00-'02 Disco II. He settled on a one owner '01 for $10,000 and 71k. Together we looked at 5 different vehicles. 3 of the 5 either needed or just had a new head gasket. One owner said, "ya, she kept over heating again, and again." I bet my Disco that engine croaks within the week. Such problems can also effect ABS, CV joints, drive shafts, it's a loooong list of common, potential and frankly - inevitable problems. Just read through the posts on this forum!!

My '02 DII was purchased a year ago with 55k for $11,000. It is in mint shape. However, the first 3 months saw $3500 in repairs and right now we're looking at another $1000 in CV joints, U Joints, etc. Actaully, I'll probably change my O2 sensors as well....another $500 or so. That's the way of the rover.

My mileage with larger tires is 15mph in town and 17 mph on the hwy. Off road it dips to probably 12mpg.

Why are you replacing CV joints and 02 sensors with such low mileage? The 02 sensors can't be needed and unless you are twice as hard on your truck as I am, you can't need the CV joints except fot the ones on your front drive shaft and thats all of $150 parts and labor.

Well what I'm looking to do is have a vehicle that is large enough to haul the family and probably do some light off-road work and bad weather driving. I currently have a 2004 Ford Ranger FX4 Level II and with 32x11.50x15 BFG A/Ts and 4.10 gears with the 5 speed manual and 4.0L SOHC V6 I get a combined MPG of about 15 with hwy mileage running at an average of 19 and no better than 22.5 so the mileage isn't all that different. Problem is that the Ranger doesnt fit my wife, me, and the baby so I need something with more passenger space.

Well after reading some of the posts on here, I think I may be better off sticking with something a tad more reliable and trouble free than a Rover. I would love to have one but I'm not gonna drop 10-16K on a high maintenance vehicle and then spend another $4K getting it road worthy. I want something that I can be confident that it will get me and my family where we need to go on a regular basis. I know all vehicle inevitably break down and always at the worst times but I just don't have the pocket book for one of these. You guys on here have been very helpful. Thanks for all the tips and advice.

I bought my 2002 Disco SE7 in 05. I have had only MINOR problems.

I just changed a serpentine belt, I had the U-joint refitted, I had the front drivers window lift arm replaced. That's about it. I take care of it but drive it hard sometimes. I've put 55K miles on it myself and it still runs like a champ.

The only things I know I am repairing are: viscious fan clutch for $285 and intake manifold kit for $175. These are normal wear and tear to me (those clutches only last about 4 years any way you cut it).

SO, the point is. I love my Rover and somehow, can't trade it in. When gas got outrageous, I test drove some NICE cars but always liked my Rover more.

The caution... Some Discos are problem free, some are only problems. Its kinda like the Ford Taurus in the mid 1990s, some would run 200K, some wouldn't run. If you know enough to check out the car before you buy, you should be ok.

Hope I've helped,

Good luck with the search and God Bless,

J. D. McD
