Default Newbie Hi.

Hi all
Ive just bought my first land Rover discovery 2 td5. Its 20 years old but i just needed an old truck to take my dogs across the fields for training. I didn't realise what good fun they are but being an old truck it comes with its problem as you would expect. Please forgive me if i ask a stupid question as i am not a mechanic but want to learn. The truck has done 190000 miles and still pulls strong but when i start it theres a grinding noise and a vibration through the brake peddle. This only happens on start up Plus there is the sound off gurgling water in the cab when i rev the engine.Any pointers would be great to get me on my way.

Cheers mate, I am guessing you are in the UK given it is a TD5? Don't get many of those here as this is mostly a US based forum, but we don't discriminate, just dont' hve a deep TD5 knowledge base. Your gurgling is likely air in the cooling system. Take the cap off th expansion tank with a cold engine and rev the engine to 2500 rpm, that should get the air out of the heater core. No idea on the grinding noise unless the starter bendix is going bad.

Wonder if it’s the abs. I remember posting this a while back.
When I start my disco I get that noise from the abs pump , one time I started with my foot on the brake and the 3 amigos showed up briefly
i remember posting but you guys didn’t seem to have this problem.

But yes when you start it the abs makes a noise not a grinding noise but a sketchy scratching noise in my case it’s been a normal thing on both my discos

No problem, and welcome to the forum. Yes, forum participants are mostly in the U.S., but we have people from the UK, continental Europe, Africa, the Caribbean and South America. We even allow Canadians! I don't recall any from Asia but I may be wrong. And there's plenty discussed that has nothing to with the engine!
