Hi,
I'm trying to help my friend's widow sell their Land Rover Discovery SE, built in 02/04. It looks great, but it hasn't run in a few years, so I'm trying to first figure out the value if it's repaired. Any help would be appreciated!
KBB gives a private party value of about $5,500 for one with 20k miles in very good condition.
On AutoTrader.com, there are several with higher mileage selling for $6-9,000, but then there are two dealerships selling them for $21-22,000. Why the big difference?
One more question (for now). One dealer says about a 2004 Discovery, "This is the last year of the BMW built Landrovers only year with the 4.6 engine and Diff.lock as well." How do I determine if my friend's Discovery was built by BMW, and does that matter?

BMW owned LR, they did not built it. It was still built in the UK. The 04 is the last of the solid axle/frame Land Rover's which were based off the Defender/Range Rover (however you want to look at it). If it really only has 20K on it, dropping in a refurbished engine and cleaning it up could fetch you a pretty penny. The body style of the D1/D2 has become a classic iconic look and people seem to be grabbing them up lately. Try to find an independent LR shop and have them look it over. HG's are a common thing, and so are slipped sleeves in the 4.6L.

So you wouldn't recommend taking it to my regular independent mechanic? If not, recommendations for a repair place in central Alabama would be great.

HG is head gasket leaking, slipped sleeve is the actual cylinder wall for the pistons that move out of the correct location and cause a big problem. Both can be rather expensive.

 

Luke, where are you located. More importantly, where is the truck? There may be a forum member nearby who can help diagnose just what the truck needs.

No disrespect intended, but if you don't have an automotive mechanical background it's a pretty steep and long learning curve.

The good news is that many, many members on this forum are very generous and kind with their time an expertise. You've come to the right place. Please let us know.

 

Find an independent LR shop, take it to them. Have it diagnosed. 20k miles, really? That's a $25k truck in tip top running shape.

Thanks for the replies. I'm in central Alabama.

I've found two shops that say they can diagnosis it and give an estimate:

• The Auto Shop, 3112 8th Ave S, Birmingham. They have a LR master technician.
• Mike and Mike's, 113 Yeager Cir, Pelham. They don't have a certified LR tech, but they work on them a lot.

Does anybody have experience with either of them?

Here are some exterior photos. I'll check the actual mileage and get interior photos soon.

You said it hasn't run in years. Do you know anything more than that? Have you tried to start it? Does the engine run at all?

I don't recall any active forum members in Central Alabama, but maybe one of the forum admins has system access to filter members based on location info.

 

Pretty nice shape, unfortunately the front bumper is cracked. Not the most desirable color, in my opinion, and the fact that you don't know if it runs or why they quit driving...it would be in the, maybe, $1,500 range, sold as is (not running) and that's only because of mileage and most likely has a solid frame). Now, if you could find out why it was parked or if it runs and it does...then that's a game changer. If it runs and doesn't knock or make any other odd noises and doesn't over heat after 30/40 minutes of run time and drives nice...then $12/15K wouldn't be an unreasonable asking price.
