Default Newbie ?'s

Just bought a 97 LR discovery and started getting her ready to head back to school...found oil leaking from the valve covers?? any ideas, anyone ever seen it? and the back door wont open? and 3 windows wont operate? a few small problems that i would like to try and solve. Any ideas would be great. Thanks everyone. What do people run for gear oil weights?

Did you not get an owners manual?
Slightly tighten the v/c bolts, don't over do it, that will usuall fix that problem.
Gear oil is in the 90W range for the diffs and t/case.
3 windows will take some time, how long before you hit the road?

Back door not opening is usually because the outside handle is corroded to the point where it won't move. Pop off the LR emblem and spray some PB blaster in there and work the door handle free. Mine was the same way and I couldn't open it from the inside either because the child lock was on. I spray it every month now... lot of road salt here.

Do what AK said, the emblem on the cargo door has a notch next to it, use your key to pop it off, or a small flat blade screw driver.
You will need a 1/4" drive 8mm socket to tighten the valve covers. $3 at Sears.
To fix the windows you will need this

While you are fixing the window lift ECU check the circuit board for broken solder joints.
Resolder them.
Also make sure that you use only premium gas.

I would like to take credit for a great idea but it was SDinDS that suggested the door handle. Usually I only get credit when something dumb is said.

The valve cover bolts are 12-point so make sure to get an appropriate socket. 8mm I believe is the correct size.

Yes, thank you AK, I forgot to include the 12pt on the 8mm socket.

Thanks for all the responses guys! i will try spraying the hardware behind the emblem. I leave for school the 25th of this month. I will try to tighten the bolts on the valve stem but while i have the time i may as well put the new gaskets in. hopefully this wont be to hard of a task.

my dad took it down the DAP near his office, which specializes in Land Rovers...and they said about 2000+ to make it a reliable rover. We bought it for 1700 with brand new Geolanders on it. And it runs very very well right now. Took it this afternoon up the hill and found some four-wheeler tracks! needless to say i decided to make my own tracks! Never got stuck and was very impressed!!! My dad got the back door to open and i just put new plugs and wires on it.

What kind of plugs and wires did you use? Any luck on the oil leak from the valve cover? There trucks are incredible in stock form off road. A few modifications and they get even better.
