No oil pressure
Hi all, 2003 DII, I have nothing showing up on the oil pressure tester gauge. Doesn't even move after a quick 3-5 second start. I plugged it into sending unit also port above and nothing not even a flicker of the needle. I pulled oil pump and pump/housing look great. I still ordered new pump, no scratches or gouging on housing so I'm going to reuse. I have to questions. New oil pump doesn't have an arrow. Is there a front and back to the inner and outer gear for the pump? Is it abnormal to have zero at the gauge? I have no knocking/ticking coming from engine bay. I've had a pump break on me in the past and engine got destroyed. I'm replacing timing gear and chain as well. 127k on this motor.
Not normal, but my dummy light can stay on longer than 3 - 5 sec. Did you check/clean the pressure relief valve? Maybe it could be stuck open. My trucks do not have a sending unit, only a switch that activates around 8 psi. The pressure will build up after the air is pushed out of the oil passages. For a new pump, some mechanics pack the oil pump with vaseline to fill the gaps in order to ensure the pump creates a good suction to pull oil up from the pan. Others will disable the fuel pump then crank the engine a lot in order to prime the oil pump, then start after that.
1st verify gauge is good. 2nd, did you pack oil pump with vaseline per the RAVE manual? Third, if you look up LS1 oil pump priming there are devices that will do it (our engine has same type of oil pump as LS1 so generally similar).
