So, am I correct in thinking the starter turns over but the engine won't start? If so, have you tried shooting some carb spray or starting fluid into the t/body, will that allow it to satrt for a moment?

I am stumped, don't know where to go with this problem.
If you try to sart the engine with your headlights on, will they stay up at full power or dim down?

Have you put a socket on the crank pulley and confirmed that the engine can be turned over by hand?

Sounds obvious, but I've seen more than a few cases of people tearing their hair out trying to turn a engine over that was locked up.

You might want to take a look at the immobiliser 'spider'; it'sa separate black box under the centre of the dash sandwiched between the radio and the heater. It controls power feeds to starter motor, fuel pump, ignition, fuel cut offetc depending on whether diesel/petrol. They are well known for having problems caused by dry solder joints and can either be repaired or replaced with a jumper plug that takes the troublesome box out of circuit. A quick google on 'discovery spider' or 'AMR4889' should give you the links you need. Good hunting!

EDIT: I re-read your original post and noted that you state no immobiliser problem.. IIRC the 'spider' is separate from the main immobiliser.. so might still be the issue. This is a common no-start/intermittent cut-out issue, so bad in fact that LR created the jumper plug as a factory modification to eliminate the 'spider'.

We had a similar problem, it turned out to be our alternator. Because our starter was good but wasn't getting any power. Checked double checked the battery and finally checked the alternator. Let me know how it turns out.
