Noise from under truck

Noise from under truck
I have a 99 D2 with 103k miles on it.
When driving around the neighborhood I hear a click noise from under the truck shortly followed by a loud thump (that I can feel under my feet in the driver seat.) Only happens on decel like driving up to an intersection and just before I apply the brakes.
I rebuilt the front driveshaft and have checked the engine, trans/transfer case mounts - they seem ok. I looked at the pan hard rods, front and rear, and they appear to be in good shape.
Any ideas?
Thanks

RE: Noise from under truck
ha, i have to admit when i read your title i couldn't help but chuckle... there's so much crap dangling around down there that noises are quite inevitable.
however what you're discribing seems worthy of attention... does it only happen during downshift? during braking? could be an internal transmission problem

RE: Noise from under truck
The transmission is operating normally. The noise seems to happen shortly after letting off the throttle. Usually happens before braking for an intersection but sometimes while braking. Does not seem to be speed related. I tried locking the transmission in 1st and sharply pushing and letting off the throttle, could not duplicate it that way.
There does not seem to be any abnormal looseness in the drivelines or axles.
I'm stumped here.

A bushing or bushings on the a-arm may be going bad causing play and possibly a thumping noise. Jack the front end of the vehicle up (against the frame, let the suspension hang). Once it is up, shake the axle back and forth and look for any play. Of course you should chalk the rear wheels to avoid the Rover coming off of the jacks. Safety first.

There is no way this is normal gear slap stuff. This started happening around 6 months ago and has gotten worse lately. I should not feel gear slap like someone hitting the floorboard with a mallet. Was worried about the transfercase comming apart, but this does not change with gear selection or speed.
I will go play with the drivelines and suspension again (with the suspension unloaded this time.)
Thanks to all of you for sharing your ideas!

Well, jacked the truck up and looked all over under there. Nothing seems loose. This is starting to look like expensive internal transfer case?!! I grabbed the drive shafts and wiggled them, not abnormally loose. If I don't find the problem soon, I will have to go to the local Rover dealer since I don't know of an indyRover specialist here.

RE: Noise from under truck
Went to an indy shop today. They inspected the drivetrain and chassis. One of the techs had seen this only once before and quickly tightened the body mounts. (The one by the driver foot-well was crazy loose) The thump is gone and so is some of the noise.
The click noise is still there and some typical drivetrain noise is noticable. They told me the slip joint in the front driveshaft makes some of this noise. Guess this is because of the lack of grease before I added the zerk and greased it when I rebuilt it.
