normal idle rpm

Default normal idle rpm

I was getting a bit of a chug chug kind of noise at warm idle. I had two mechanics listen to it and both said they heard nothing out of the ordinary. One said it was probably from too low of an idle. When warm my '03 idles around 400rpm. If I rev it to around the 700-750 rpm range I hear no noises. Is my idle too low and is it adjustable? My idle is a bit choppy, could I have a vacuum leak causing low idle and choppyness?

Got a check engine light? Both my Disco's idle at 750 RPM.

400 seems too low, mine sits at about 650~700 at hot idle with a/c off, a/c on about 50 higher. Clean your throttle body and idle control valve and see if that makes a difference. You cannot adjust your idle, it is all comnputer controlled.

I will try cleaning the throttle body and IACV and see what happens. No check engine light.

The IAC valve is very simple to clean too...just unhook it from both tubes, disconnect the electrical connection, pull it off (you need to of course also unbolt it from the 2 plastic clamps) and spray the crap out of it...don't be shy with spraying it down until it's sparkling clean...a lot of junk is going to come out of it if it's the 1st time it's been cleaned.

On the original question my D2 idles consistently a hair below 750...

Sounds easy enough. Far as I know it has never been cleaned.

Only word of advice I have is to be careful taking off the spring clip from the electrical connector...I've had one fall down into the engine bay never to be found...and it's a bi*** to find replacements locally...they have to be ordered unless you have a dealer nearby.

thanks for the advice. Just regular carb cleaner? What about the MAF, any point in spraying it down with some electric parts cleaner?

Yup, carb cleaner is fine. I would leave the MAF alone...too many people's MAFs have crapped out after cleaning...I'd start with what Bundu said and go with those 2 1st and go from there.
