Default OBD II port dead

When trying to fix my three amigos, I had my codes read at the local auto parts store. I saw the machine connect to the car and give a code.

I just tried to get the truck inspected and the OBD II port where you plug in the scanner is no longer working. I have tried it with my ScanGauge II and at the inspection station.

I checked all of the fuses, both in the car, and under the hood.

What next? I'm not sure where to even start.

It looks like there are only 4 wires going to the plug. Can I test one of the wires to see if there is power to the plug? Am I totally hosed?

Thanks,
John

First of all, the normal scanner can't read ABS codes, takes a special one.
As for the port, look and see if a wire has been pulled loose or a pin is bent.

Hi Mike,

You already mentiond the ABS codes, but that's rather moot at this point.

I did check the wires going into the plug and the look like they were in correctly and there were no bent pins. Anything else I can do?

Thanks,
John

So I tested the wires and none of them are hot. I then went inside the house, got my keys and tested the wires with the ignition on, but still none were hot.

Does anyone know if the Diagnostic Socket listed in the Electrical Circuit Diagrams is indeed the OBD plug? If so, does that mean I should have 5 wires going to the plug?

I currently only have 4, two black wires in pins 4 and 5, a red one in pin 7 and a purple one to pin 16.

I'm tempted to just run a hot wire to pin 16 to see if that works, but I really don't want to fry anything.

This might sound stupid, but are you putting your ignition in position 2 before trying to scan ???

I would talk with a knowledgable mechanic and or go look at someone else OBD2 port and see what they have that you may not.

After perusing the wiring schematics, it looks like the missing 5th wire goes to the fuel-burning heater which I don't have, and the other 4 wires are in the appropriate locations.

I narrowed it down to a lack of power at pin 16. purple wire, which is supplied via fuse 20, but the fuse is working fine.

I'm a little concerned that it stopped working, but at this point, its even more important that I get the truck through the state inspection.

To that end, I jumped a 12v to pin 16 and my ScanGauge powered up, and successfully connected to the car and showed no codes, so for now, I'm going to add a very temporary jumper to pass inspection, and then I'll reconnect the existing wire.

Thanks.

Hi mike, sorry to bug and jump on an old post but I have been trying to figure out why my obd2 port went dead. Before that I had an issue with my courtesy lights (dome lights) not comming on when car was unlocked, door open or manually on the dome light. I tested all fuses and wirrimg loks good. I bought an obd2 scanner since I needed to scan my brother in laws car and just tried to run it on my 2002 disco and no power to power up the scanner.
The day before my dome lights stopped working, my son who is 15 months kept pressing the keyless entry locking and unlocking. Could this be the issue that caused my problems? I have heard that body control unit (BCU) could be the cultprit but I am not sure. I just bought the 2002 disco and love it. Also found out the damn head gasket is leaking and I have been buying all of rhe parts needed to re seak the entire motor and gaskets to change the leaking head gaskets. You seem to be very knowledgeable and would like to have some assistance please. Thank uou and look forward to your reply.

I had issues with my dome lights not working. I had corrosion on 3 headers by in the pass foot well, by the blower motor. I started a thread on the issue. The OBDII plug gets it data through one of the headers (gray one)
