Default OBD or OBD II ?

Hi all,

Does anybody have a Discovery 96 SE7 (4.0 liter, V-8 engine)?

I would like to buy an OBD Reader for my Disco '96 and I was wondering if you could help me to get the right one.

Should I be looking for an OBD or OBD-II Reader?

Which of these OBD protocols does my car use?

J1850 PWM
J1850 VPW
ISO9141-2 (KWP 1281)
ISO14230-4 (KWP 2000)

Thanks a lot,

'95 and newer are required to use OBDII, Fed law.
You can confirm this by looking under the drivers dash for the port.

Actually it was OBD2 on 96's and newer. Why do you want to buy a scanner, you can get the codes read at most auto parts stores and save some money.

Your OBDII scanners come in two groups the newest are C.A.N. (control area network) they cost the most.

All scanners that are C.A.N. will read the older OBDII systems.

I have a scanner that I got from Pepboys 9135# for about $75 U.S. it works on my Disco with the code and tells you what the code is, it is not C.A.N. system.

I got one at harbor freight tools for $35 and it works great. You have to look up the codes, but I know most by heart now...
