Default Odd Transmission Issues - New to Land Rover

Hey Everyone! I have just acquired my first 1999 Discovery 2 from my brother (bmwtinut) and first Land Rover ever. It has been off the road for several years though running strong with new fluids and battery. After replacing the XYZ switch, changing of the fluids, servicing the brakes, and numerous test drives we are pleasantly surprised by the smooth operations. After driving it for about 40-45 min the disco began to shutter/buck and with in seconds it felt as if it was in neutral. I pulled over put it into park and shut off the truck. No lights on the dash and all shift indicators working fine. After about 30 seconds I started the truck up and it drove fine for about 2 more minutes. After getting the truck towed home it all seemed fine until I ventured about 5 miles from my house where the problem started again but I got code p0741 (torque converter) and I did the same process of shutting it off and back on to limp it back home and I drained the trans fluid again, added Lucas to mix and cleared the code. Testing it out seemed to be a better but after about 8 miles the problem appeared again but no light but I do occasionally hear a chatter similar to a heatshield. I am looking into a mechanic in the area that would be willing to diagnose and work on it, but would like to address the situation myself if possible or at least be knowledgable about it before handing my bank account over to a mechanic. Thanks for your help and advice!

Did you fill the transmission according to the process in the manual, i.e. with the engine running? If you didn't you're way low, which may cause substantial trouble.

Yes I filled the trans until it was overflowing, brought the truck to up operating temp and filled it while it was running, capped it and shifted through the gears 4x's, topped it off while running and hot, and capped it when the drip was about 1 per second. checked and topped off after test drives as well. took no extra fluid after last warm up and drive.

Could be a few different things, see as you are new check the following :
  1. Front shaft for binding or looseness
  2. Transfer case level - lots of these truck never have it checked or changed
  3. Diffs same check levels
  4. Rear drive shaft
  5. CPS issue ?
  6. you could have a clogged transmission cooler
Odd are it is transmission related but with full time 4 wheel drive it could be other drive train issues

Yeah, you have a worn TCC, time for a replacement. I know Doc Heydary on Facebook has several good used transmissions, tell him I sent you.

Sounds like that HP22 is on it's way out sadly, I would personally slap in the HP24 from the 03-04 D2. It is stronger, and no real mods are needed to install it vs the HP22. I know several people that had 99-02 D2's with blown HP22's and they went with the HP24 and had no issues with the swap.

Automatic transmissions can die in all sorts of ways. Was the original fluid burnt smelling at all? Fluid dark at all vs being red in color? Could be a weak pump, valve body, bad TC, or worn clutches inside the transmission.

Nah, his symptoms are exactly consistent with torque converter shudder from a bad tcc clutch.

Thanks! I looked up your friend but didnt see any transmissions for sale. My brother had the trans looked at by a LR mech shortly before he took it off the road and they said all looked great. If the tcc is the issue, should I replace the entire trans since you have to drop it anyways? trying not to spend all my money but dont want to do the work twice.

I've bought complete HP24's with the TC for as little as 300.00 for a good used one.

Message Doc directly, I know he had several. HP24 recommendation is a good one. For the price it would be good to replace the entire trans.
