Default Off road situation - HDC - looking for input

I recently installed an 04 CDL and had it out in the snow last weekend and today i had it in the melting snow and mud as a way of improving my driving skills and learning more about the disco's capabilities. I was descending a steep hill with deep tire ruts. I straddled the ruts going down the hill the entire way while the HDC, 1st gear lo, CDL all engaged. Toward the bottom of the hill i hit some soft slushy ground and the disco's back end sort of fished tailed quite a bit to the left and i ended up with the nose of the disco pointing perpendicular toward the right. I didnt enage the break pedal so i know that wasnt what put me into a spin. I've gone down this same hill when the dirt was dry several times without incident using HDC.

Curious to learn how others would have handled this situation?

Thanks!

I like the "go as slow as you can and as fast as you have to" motto. Momentum pushing rear more than front due to slush slowing the front first....but I would want to stay in the straight tracks, if I can clear, too.

Keep in mind that you can drive the vehicle too. I was in the mud a couple days ago and same thing started to happen. I tapped the gas a little bit to straighten it out. The computer is good but not as good as you...

Like Humdinger said, the computer is good but not as good as you... you have to remember it doesn't have eyes or ears

When in doubt - floor it

Please, for your safety, do not ever use hill descent control. HDC was a marketing tool during the D2 lifespan, it slows the vehicle to around 7.6mph; which is far too fast for any real off-road situation.

Use 1st low, and use the brakes sparingly. Keep a slow steady speed and never lock the wheels up, you'll stay straight.

For additional info- the newer vehicles allow you to adjust HDC speed to 1-10mph or so, much more usable.
