Default Oh boy here we go

Ok my last post about this got pused back to far so here is what I got from LR:

The Crank Position Sensor andValve Cover Gasket need to be replaced. LR said it would cost $982.00 to do everything (includes labor). Does anyone know anything about what the price should be for a repair like this?? I dont know anything about these repairs, is there something that I should have seen that would have led my to beleive that this is the problem? Would these cause the car to shut off?? Please let me know anything you know!!! Mike, I had codes about a week ago but they went off off about 3 days before my problems began to happen. They were:

P1172:
Manufacturer Control,
Fuel Air Metering.

P1175:
Manufacturer Control
Fuel Air Metering.

P0455:
EVAP Emission
Control System Leak (LARGE)

INPUT IN APPRECIATED!!
Thanks,
Cameron

(PS-my truck is a 2000 w/ 92,000)

Cameron,
A crank shaft sensor will not allow the truck to get fuel if it has failed.
You are looking and parts of about $100 and as for labor, I watched my mechanic pull mine out in less then 40 minutes.
I think I would shop around a little for a much better estimate.
Mike

Sounds through-the-roof to me dude. I've heard of people paying only a couple/few hundred more than that for complete head gasket jobs (both sides).

Although I've never done a crank position sensor on my LR, I've done many sensors (cam position, crank position, etc.) on a BMW and they weren't anywhere near that kind of dough.....even when paying someone else to do it.That said, these things are ofteneasy DIY's. Again, not as sure about the LR.

Like most other gaskets/seals on the LR, valve cover leaksare very common. You could probably find minor to moderate valve cover leaks on just about every Disco on the road. I'd only stress out about replacing them if it's a steady leak (i.e., drips on the ground). Otherwise, if it's a only a "seep", you can simply keep an eye on the oil level and hold off until that repair isn't compounded on top of another (assuming the crank sensor is a must-do). Even when you replace the VC gaskets, there's a pretty strong chance they'll leak again.....eventually. Talk to Mike about doing them yourself if you're willing to take a crack at it. He recently suggested that it's a pretty easy/quick.

Hope that helps. If nothing else, I'd suggest calling an independent shop and asking them to quote those items for you.
