Oil analysis.
Just recieved am e-mail with the results from the oil sample i had sent out in hopes of determining this annoying little knock in my 4.0. Well, they said its was very clean, nothing unnormal as far as metal content. This would lead to my to believe that if you have a knock and you know its in the engine, but no metal is found, there is only like one thing i can think of causing it. A lifter that wont hold pressure and the plunger is bottoming out? as long as its still turning its not chewing up the cam which would have turned up on the sample..
Any other input would be appreciated..

Why did you get the analysis only after a 1000 miles?
How long have you had the knock for? Do you always use a 10w30 oil?
Try putting in a Xw40 weight. Either Mobil 10w40 high mileage, Mobil turbo diesel 5w40, Shell Rotella Synthetic (blue bottle) 5w40. You can get all those oils at walmart for really cheap.
That Mobil 10w30 sheared Very fast down to almost a 20 weight. Rovers are flat tappets and need a higher weight oil.
Are you sure it is the engine? You can use a stethoscope to narrow down the noise.

How much did the SOS set you back?
Did you have to order a kit or send them your oil sample in a Tupperware bowl?
I agree with Jupiter 100%, you need to use 10w40 or a 15w-40, then in the winter time, since you live in PA, use 0w-40 or 5w-40 in the winter time.
If you lived in AZ, FL, CA, etc. then I'd use the 15w-40 year round.
Perssonaly I use Mobil 1 15w-50 in the summer and Mobil 1 5w-30 in the winter.

I have been all over it with the s'scope and the only place i can find any kind of tap is at the back of the motor, no pinpoint place though. And i didnt realize that that oil was 5w30 until after i had sent it out, which explains wht they said. for yrs i ran the higher weight and when the noise was getting more pronounced i tried a lighter oil to see if it the noise differed with engine temp and oil weight, nothing has seemed to change it other than when its first filled up after a change and lucas is added. then when its hot it will coem rite back.
