Thank you very much for your advices. I live on the east coast- MARYLAND. By the way, what about synthetic blend? I needed one quart the other day, the parts man said that it was the appropriate one to use.

I'm a Mobile 1 *****, so thats all that gets put into anything I own with an engine.

In the Rover, I run Mobile 1 5w30 with a mobile filter. The Buell gets Mobile 1 20w50, and the womans Jeep gets Mobile 1 5w30 as well.

I even use it as gun oil...

mobil 1 5w30 (and all other energy conserving GF5 oils) has pretty low anti wear additives for a flat tappet engine. Mobil 1 5w30 specifically has typically performed the poorest in used oil analysis over on bob is the oil guy, so much so it is a running joke. I like mobil 1 too but I use some of their stouter heavy duty oils. Just food for thought.

Thats interesting... Can you provide a link to that info???

I really like the mobile 1 5w30 for its cold start properties, especially when it's -30* here in the winter. However, if there are better alternatives to run in my Disco that will still provide the same cold start properties, I would appreciate the input.

You'll have to bear with me some, as 98% of my engine maintenance experience comes from Jeep straight 6's which are pretty in-sensitive as far as engine lubricants go.

So, make sure if you are doing the oil change that you change it every 3000 miles for regular oil or 5000 miles for a synthetic. Always fill the oil filter 2/3rds. full before installing to prevent a dry start. What about the rest of the service, needed at 90K, are you going to do that also? If you are not sure what is needed look at my Sticky post at the top of the section.

Does it really get to be -30F in WI regularly? I see the record low was -32F back in 1951 but the average twmp in january seems to be around 8F. Wind chill does not count.

Go to Bob is the Oil Guy and read up it is a very popular discussion point:

http://www.google.com/cse?cx=0182999...Iron&sa=Search

They have a UOA section too and most every mobil 1 5w30 UOA shows elevated Iron, Aluminum and Copper. No one can say for certain but I've seen it enough that I don't use it in the toyota any longer. Mobil 1 0w40 works very well in the winter here and is a heavy duty engine oil, Castrol syntec 0w30 (made in germany, hence called German Castrol) is another "thinner" heavy duty engine oil (it is not an energy conserving oil like M1 0w30). IMHO 30 wt energy conserving oils are too thin for this engine. I like using a synthetic 5w40 like mobil 1 5w40 TDT and Rotella 5w40 but are on the thicker side.

The better M1 oils are the EP oils, the HM oils, 0w40, 0w30, 0w20, 5w40 TDT, 15w50. I used M1 0w40 last winter here in buffalo and it did great no clatter on cold starts at all. Oh yeah and the last point remember that most "synthetic" oils like mobil 1 are not truly synthetic any longer (ester or POE basestock) but are in fact highly processed conventional oil. That is why you can get 5 quarts of M1 for $22 at walmart.

So what do you think of Castrol's new "Edge" oil?

How about Lucas High TBN 15w-40? It says lower operating temps and higher oil pressure. (Just what a Disco 2 needs! )

I've used it in my corolla it is a great oil but again it is a GF-5 energy conserving oil made with more modern engines in mind.
