Default Oil cooler install success stories anyone?

I have looked before posting and can find plenty of install threads but none actually tell if they lowered the oil temps with the install of a oil cooler either factory or aftermarket. Does anyone have any info on oil temps before and after? I have a 04 with a tired (175k) engine and the oil pressure behaves in range until I do a highway drive then back at hot idle it gets scary low, technically in spec but low. Curious if a oil cooler would help this.
I have Extinct's thermostat mod which is great, now trying to see if I can maybe get the oil temp to drop a bit. Especially after a highway stint. Just trying to get my engine to live a bit longer until I can build a replacement. Other than that it runs pretty well. Any before after stories on oil cooler results with oil temp data appreciated.

I also have a new oil pump and cover, which did help. Running Valvoline VR1 20w 50 for summer.

I'm curious too. Have an 03 with the inline thermostat mod on a Turner engine with ~40K miles.

I started to collect bits to put a cooler in using a sandwich adapter and never finished up due to not finding a good location for the cooler. I have a skid plate and dropping that was more than I wanted to tackle at the time. I am also running an ARB bumpper with a winch, which also takes up space.

I started to look for a spot to wire in a fan for the cooler but didn't get very far.

My D2 runs low 180s and I change the oil every 3000 miles and Covid hit and trips reduced.... So I never picked the project back up.

Few summers ago we did a big trip around Washington, Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming. Saw over 100' F on the freeway at times. Rover had a very full load and did great but I was wondering if an oil cooler would have been a good idea.

I don't think that it could hurt in any way. I have no way to quantify other than cooler oil even marginally over time would be greatly beneficial in these motors. The stock location above the trans cooler between ac condenser and radiator isn't ideal but there is room to add a cooler there.

I looked there and test fitted a cooler. Didn't want to add a heat source in front of the radiator. 🤷🏻‍♂️

I added the stock oil cooler from my old '99 to my '03, but I don't have any before/after comparison data. With the inline thermostat mod I run at a constant 186.6 on the highway according to the Ultragauge, but I don't know what the oil temp is.

Yes, I installed an oil cooler in my '04. It reduced oil temps by 20 degrees Fahrenheit (I have a permanent temp gauge which I installed long before I added the oil cooler), but I doubt it will help your oil pressure problem. If you haven't found it, here is my report: https://landroverforums.com/forum/di...ys-cold-95865/

I just found your other install thread earlier today and was going to reach out. Thanks for sending. A few questions -
- You bypassed the front cover ports and went with the sandwich adapter because it was not compatible on the 04 cover. This seems to be debated. Some say it works fine through ports 3&4 in picture below. Im ok using either but wanted to know if it does work or not plumbed through ports 3 & 4.
- You used the factory cooler and mentioned you wish you used the trans cooler. I have a factory one to use and 20 deg seems pretty good to me, or at least better than nothing. Do you still think the bigger cooler would be better? I would think going too big could create a pressure drop due to the volume and the surface area might impose on the other cooling system (air flow).

- My oil pressure. I don't know if it will help or not but it appears my low idle pressure issue is heat influenced. Around town hot idle is 12-15psi. I had it on the highway yesterday for 45 min, at the first stop after it idled at around 10psi. Only thing I could think is its hotter and thinner. I have drained the oil when hot-ish and it comes out like water. As mentioned I am trying to keep this alive until I have a engine to swap and I figure the oil cooler might help and will be compatible with whatever I replace with in the future. Thanks for the info!

Use the trans cooler if you can, there will not be a pressure drop issue and it will cool slightly better. I helped a forum member with his install, he had 04 and did not use the sandwich adapter, before the install we confirmed he had all the pressure relief bits in this front cover (he had purchased a used spare just in case).

On my 00 oil temp runs about 15 degrees above ECT.

Pls read the first post of my oil cooler thread again. The stock ports don't work because the bypass valve is always open, bypassing the oil cooler all the time. I also found out why the the bypass valve is always open, explained in another post in this thread. Either you have to make that valve working (get the missing parts) or simply install a sandwich, which is even better than tapping the stock ports because of an integrated thermostat.

For most of the time the stock oil cooler is fine, trans cooler might be a good idea if you are doing a lot of HD work with your Disco.

Hi Discorama, yes read that, that's why I'm curious why some say it works fine. maybe some 04 covers have the valve and some do not. I like the adaptor with thermostat option and might just go with that. looks simple enough.
