Default Oil Cooler Installation 03/04???

I'm possibly going to have to replace my front cover. That being said, has anyone with an 03/04 or other year installed an Oil Cooler (for engine oil not Trans fluid) when one wasn't installed from the factory? I think the engine would benefit from this.

I started with it but did not actually hook up the cooler hoses. I have a 2002 oil cooler installed in front of the rad, it's a simple install. You need a front cover that has the extra pressure relief valve for the oil cooler circuit, this has been left out of the 03/04 front cover. Hook up the hoses and check your oil level and you should be good to go. I'm just too lazy to hook up the hoses at this point, more pressing issues to deal with right now.

Bundu, So you also think this would be benefit to the engine. What does the Oil cooler mount to? Did you need to fabricate some brakets to mount it to?

It looks like the RAVE Manual talks about an oil cooler but it is actually the Transmission oil cooler from what I found out when I replaced the radiator the other day. I don't see where it even shows the Engine Oil Cooler intallation.

Both the engine oil cooler and the tranny oil cooler mount to the front of the rad, just look at how the tranny cooler is mounted and do the same with the engine oil cooler. The engine oil cooler sits above the tranny cooler. The mounting points are on the rad for the oil cooler, I think you just need 2 screws - or maybe they were there already, I can't remember.

As far as benefiting the engine, I don't know... but it can't hurt it I think. Not unless it cools the oil too much, engine oil should be about 100C.
Think about this a moment: the engine oil coolers were removed on the 03/04. Which engines have a tick/noise problem?

I'm guessing this oil can use a cooler operating temp with all the varish these engines produce. I'm going to complete the install and see about installing a temp gauge for the system to check temp before and after install.

Did you ever complete the install of the oil cooler? I would be interested in seeing how much it effects the oil temp.

So has anyone with a 03/04 done this yet? Does the engine oil cooler stack on top of the trans cooler? Also did the 2000-02 come with both a trans and engine oil cooler. Just curious. Were the coolers different or the same? I would have to reconfigure my oil pressure tapped plug but this would be a neat mod.

"You need a front cover that has the extra pressure relief valve for the oil cooler circuit, this has been left out of the 03/04 front cover."

Has anyone installed an oil cooler on there 4.6 03/04? Can anyone confirm the statement above? I was under the impression all of the taps are there just plugged.

I installed an oil temp gauge and it gets up to 220 under normal driving ... I am amazed more people aren't installing these to extend the life of the engine...220 is way to hot for oil. It stays around 180 at idle but soon as you get on the highway forget it...

Rad system was flushed, replaced with T-stat with 180 freelander stat, global peak and water wetter, 75k on the truck.

Oil pressure - 10-54 idle/2000rpm (hot)
