K&N and Mobile 1 filters are good. 03's with an early production date need to have the oil pump watched. If your oil light ever comes on, stop the truck and check the oil. I would only use one of the 2 above filters.

Using a filter magnet as well won't hurt.

I too use the K&N with Mobile 1 synthetic oil in my 2003 Disco. Doing very well...

Be sure to read the owners manual for the proper oil and filter change procedure on your 2003. It reads that the oil should be drained and then replinished before removing and changing the oil filter. Also, it describes prefilling the filter with oil to avoid a dry oil pump situation.

I just picked up a K& N 3001 for my next change. I was wondering about those filter magnets...are they really going to make any difference? I mean a good quality filter is designed to stop all but the tiniest micron of a particle from passing through. And is there any chance that the magnetic field might affect the spring loaded by-pass valve?

You're correct. The magnet is not necessary as the filter media will catch the beasties as they pass through the filter anyway. They can come in handy however if you regularly cut your filters open to look for debris because it will collect ferrous debris in one spot for easy sifting.Any pieces big enough to have a part number onthem are usually a bad sign [8D]

Cutting filters openis standard practice in heavy equipment and aircraft operations, and I've done it many times. Never used a magnet though and caught lots of debris over the years anyway. I drag a magnet over the filter media once I've stretched it out and catch debris that way. Works fine.

Will a K&N bypass if it won't allow oil-flow?
