Have just the same question! There are so much info on this topic about other cars ( like X5 about X5 I own,too ), but as for Land Rover can't find adequate recommendations anywhere.

Can someone ELI5 why a bigger filter is better? I just spent the last 20 minutes researching oil filter options and keep seeing this comment.

I found a 6 pack of Purolator filters on ebay for $1 each and do either 3,000 mile oil changes, or 2 years, which ever comes first.

LOL at all of this. How many of you guys have ever had an oil analysis run on your rigs? If not, quit throwing money away on filters, synthetic, etc and spend a little money on oil analysis. You will likely learn a lot depending on your driving style.

Short trips? Will probably come back diluted with fuel. Synthetics are a waste for this because you have to change it get the viscosity back up.

Longer trips? Probably find out your oil doesn't need to be changed so often.

High silicone content? - check your air filter, get rid of that K&N and put a good fram paper filter in there.

High aluminum content? Rut roh - change it and check again. Maybe you do have a crappy filter. Ask for a particle size distribution.

Analysis cost more than the oil change, but helps adjust your oil changes based on your driving habits and then you can stop the analysis.

I use Mobil1 M301, K&N HP3001, or Motorcraft FL1A. I will not use a crappy FRAM oil filter on anything I own. Engine oil wise Rotella 15/40w has treated me very well in Jeeps & LR’s.

It's kind of like the thermostat issue. There is only a couple assembly lines, companies just rebrand them. Then they sit back and watch everyone on forums talk about how they are different all the while the element inside is exactly the same as the higher priced part.

I'd like to know also about using longer oil filters like the Purolator #L40316.
Until then I'll stick with my K&N 3001 with the 1" nut to tighten.

The Motorcraft = filter element by Puralator, but it has specific Motorcraft/Ford tweaks. Not sure on the K&N or Mobil1, but I’m guessing Wix.

Motorcraft FL1A with unique slots vs holes.

FRAM PH8A with rather small holes.

K&N HP3001 with much larger holes.
