Default Oil & Fluids for 2004 Disco

Hey guys,

I am about to do my first oil change at 100k. I bought this DISCO at 98k from a guy that only had it serviced at Landrover. I was wondering what is the best type of oil I should use. Should I go synthetic? I live in NY so its going to start to get cooler soon.

I also am going to do the transmission fluid and the transfer case fluid. What fluids do you recommend for that? Should that also be synthetic?

I do have a small leak. I am not sure if a thicker oil will prevent this... See attached oil drip.

+1 This is exactly what I am using as well. Also, for bonus points when I got my Tuner engine they suggested added a
bottle of Comp Cams break in fluid bottle of Comp Cams break in fluid
at every oil change. I am not sure if others have an opinion on using this with the stock engine but it stands to reason that it would be beneficial.

If that is all that you have for an oil leak I gotta say you need to get drunk and slap your wife on the ***.

It's gonna leak. Embrace the madness.

I did a half bottle of compcams for awhile, and then just rotella, and now I am adding a zddp additive.

I’ll have to review my docs from Turner, and go back to the compcams if that is what they suggest.

For the Rotella Shell 15/40w should I get the sythetic oil?

Shell ROTELLA® T5 Synthetic Blend 15W-40 Motor Oil

this the one?

For the transmission Oil which one should I get?

do you guys have any links? I really don't want to put in the wrong fluids in.

I believe the T4, T5, or T6 is all okay. T4 is conventional, T5 is blend and T6 is full synthetic.

You don't really want synthetic in a high mile Rover V8. Go with the T4.

I use T4. Tried a synthetic blend (T5) and oil leaks popped up...not horrible, changed back to dino (T4)...and they disappeared. Completely. Your engine seals will develop small micro-cracks within the rubber portion with age and synthetic has smaller molecules and squeezes through...whereas...dino won't. You will read/hear great debate in this area, especially by none certified folks. But, the proof is in the pudding and my 78, 84 cars and 01, 03 rovers leak like pigs on full synthetics...and I mean horribly.

Also, your oil leak looks to be coming down along bell-housing...most likely tapped cover gasket. Easy fix, just be sure to locate all four (on each side) of the small metal grommets that are in the original gaskets, while removing. They can fall down into the engine, having a magnet to retrieve them is paramount.

Brian.
