Default Oil Leak - Pictures

So, I am new to Land Rovers and to forums in general but I have found this website so helpful and figured I would give it a go.

I live in Sullivan County, NY. I just purchased a 2001 Land Rover Disco 2 about a month ago with 115k miles on it! It seems in great shape. Paint and interior are near mint condition. Runs and shifts smoothly, just a small, light ticking when starting cold (May be an exhaust leak as circled in the picture?? It sounds exhaust-like but I'll be looking into this more in the threads).

It has the CDL, just not hooked up yet. Head gaskets, serviceable U-Joints, 180 thermostat, and plugs and wires were done by the previous owner. Otherwise, all stock except for a Voyager roof rack, ladder, and brush guard that came with it.

I did a coolant flush about 3 weeks ago, removing the Dex and replacing it with Peak Gold. I also did an oil change about 3 weeks ago, replacing the oil with Rotella T 15-40.

Which brings me to my problem. The previous owner told me there was a small leak. Once I did the oil change the oil level held until about a week ago when it started dropping; enough to see on the dipstick as I checked every other day or so. No drips on the ground where I park though, at all. I suspect there may be a leak from the transfer case too, just based on the look of it, but I have not checked the level yet. I know I should wipe everything down and then keep an eye on it to see if I can spot the leak; I am planning on doing this very soon. I just figured I would throw these pictures up now and see if you can spot anything obvious.

Hello and welcome to Land Rover.

I have to laugh a little, because my 02 had the same welds on the exhaust pipe after the manifold. I ended up replacing the entire catalytic converter set with magnaflows.

I myself am still dealing with a leaky T-case. Just keep fluid in it until you can do a proper reseal on it.

The image of the transmission bell housing is normal. At least my D2 has that little opening in the same spot. Resealing the trans pan is actually easy.

Like you said, clean it up and get a better idea of how much fluid it is actually losing. start with what is the worst.. work your way down.

Also.. it's not leaking. That's controlled seepage, or the D2 is marking its territory.

In those pics. it doesn't look like it's leaking enough to be noticeable on the dipstick. If it was leaking that bad, you'd certainly have noticeable drips where you park. Mine leaves drips and doesn't go low. So, if it's not leaking it out, it's going out the tailpipe. The first thing I would do is replace the PCV valve.
Get used to the tick. Ticking is a Land Rover's favorite pass time.

How does the magna flow sound? Just curious, as replacing the exhaust wouldn't be a bad idea - just had one leak fixed.

I'm going to clean it all up today and keep an eye on everything. I'll pick up a new pcv valve as well. Hopefully, worst comes to worst I'll end up replace some seals.

You may have some seals that are leaking just a bit. Next time you do an oil change, try some high mileage oil. It has seal conditioners in it and they work really well in most cases. Especially very slow, small leaks which is what yours look like. To me the leaks don't look like anything to worry about.
The PCV valve is a really good place to start. They're super easy to replace and super cheap. They're part of routine maintenance anyway. When I bought my Rover, it was losing a little oil and when I checked out the PCV valve, it looked like it had been in there forever! It may have even been the original one. I replace mine about every year or two and I haven't had anymore problems at all with oil loss.

Actually, I'll have to check, but I think I may have misspoke about replacing the PCV valve. I think I'm thinking of the Range Rover. On the DII if I remember right, I had to clean it. I could be wrong, but I think it's inside the valve cover under the baffle plate. Anyway, it does the same thing, it just separates the oil out of the air from the crankcase. I apologize for the mix up. I'm getting too old to remember things. LOL!
Anyway, there aren't too many ways that oil is going to disappear like that without leaving drips in the driveway.

It sounds really good actually. I do have a full MagnaFlow exhaust as well. I have 2 youtube videos of it.
Just search 2002 land rover discovery full magnaflow. I like it.

Where did you get the full Magnaflow system from? I keep looking around on Magnaflow's website and can only find a cat-back system? I'm really interested in buying it. Thank you

crucifix seals clean it up and keep track of it.
you could look inside the inspection plate, but the oil has probably been thrown all over the inside the bell housing
