Default Oil leak, should I buy?

To begin, I have never owned a land rover, but I have always loved them, so I think it is time to purchase one. I test drove a couple yesterday. The first made some funky noises, so I think that is a no go. The second was the green color, which I love! It drove great. However, there is oil in two places. First, there appears to be a bit of oil leaking from a hose towards the top of the engine. If you are looking at the engine, it comes out to the left. It is almost located in the direct center of the motor. I know that is not very much help. I need a picture or something. Second, there was some oil around the oil pan. The owner said it has leaked as long as he has owned the car (40k), but has never had to add oil. So I guess it is a slow leak.

So what should I do? Buy or not?

This is a 97 Discovery with 98k miles.

EEHHHH, the one around the oil pan is prolly just an oil pan gasket. but the other I dunno? Does the seller have service records? If you are set on getting it just check records real good. Also, do you plan on doing any repairs yourself? That WILL be a factor. dealer is very expensive even routine stuff.

Yes I plan on doing as many repairs myself, well as many as possible. That is one of the reasons I am looking at the Disco I model. I have read that it is much easier to work on.

Yeah, it is made to be worked on "in the field" I have a 97 discoI and have had some troubles but I still love it. Most all "small stuff" I have done. Other stuff steering, brakees, etc. I take to a local guy. I'd get a repair manual ASAP after you get your truck

I think what you are talking about is the auto rust proofer, yes the oil leak.
No just kidding.
All the Disco I's leak a little oil not much but a little.
The Disco I is easy to work on.
I do my own work to help relax, and most is small things.
You will find that the transfer case wines and when you
back up you may here a clunk.
I think thats about all the odd things that Land Rovers do
that other 4X4 can't.
See you on the road or off!!
