Default Oil Light - Engine Noise

My 2003 Disco was driving fine, never had any engine problems other than the standard oil drips. Yesterday the oil light came on while driving, and then the engine started making a rattling noise. The engine had oil in it prior to this (just checked a couple of days ago). After this happened, the engine temp was within normal range and the 'check engine' light remained off, but there were rattles that were different thanvalve clap. Any ideas what this might be seeing as the engine didn't appear to overheat or sieze?

Thanks -

DO NOT RESTART that engine, it is failing and any additional driving will mean a new engine.
Call your dealer tomorrow and let him know you may have another one of their failing oil pumps, are in in warranty?

Thanks for the warning, I'll have it towed in tomorrow. Unfortunately it is outside of the warranty since it has58,600 miles, so I'll be paying myself...

Mike-Would this be covered under the TSB that Land Rover has out on '03's?
Most anufatures cover TSB's if the customer puts up a stick about it, but what about LR?

Possible, but with Rover in the middle of a sale, I doubt it.

I am sorry to hear about your engine.

If you are the original owner and your VIN is within the range plus you have done your scheduled services and your service booklet is stamped by the dealer or independent shop, I am sure that you will get a positive response from the service advisor.

If I were you, I would fight this one and will not pay for it myself.

Even if I have to call Mr. Ratan Tata himself in Mumbai, India.

You have done nothing wrong and this is a 100% design flaw that has been documented by LR.

I am thinking about installing an analog oil pressure gauge on my 2004 in a pod on the A pillar, despite the fact that it is not in the VIN range

Do not drive it, have it towed to your shop, the oil pump has failed.

Rover will do nothing to help any customer with this problem.
Find a non dealer shop, have it towed in and inspected then start a search for a good guaranteed used engine, like from,
http://www.roverlandparts.com/engine-complete.aspx
Your only other option is a new engine at the $8000 to $11000 range.
