Oil light issue please help
Yesterday prior to a trip from Atlanta to North Carolina, I took my land rover discovery (2002) to the shop for a routine oil change. This was the first oil change since I purchased it less than 3000 miles ago, but the oil was changed right before I purchased it. Anyway oil was replaced with 10w30 with a note from one of the mechanics that the old oil looked really thick. Drove 74 miles up the interstate and the oil light came on and ten seconds later started losing power. Thank the lord I was 1/4 mile away form an exit and was able to coast in to a gas station. I got out and heard a knocking from the engine but the oil was full and there was no overheating or anything like that. Turned it off and had it towed. The shop looked it over, saying it could be a handful of things but flushed the engine replaced the oil and then added Lucas to the oil. Drive it home no problems and no light. While at the gas station after about 30+ minutes of sitting I started it up with no knock or light as well. I've now put 30+ miles on it since the engine flush and adding the Lucas with no problem but I'm terrified to try and make the 330 mile trip to NC, any comments or opinions on the matter would be greatly appreciated since I know many of you guys know your stuff.
first you should be using 10-40 not 10-30, but i fear you may have a bigger problem if the Lucus made that big a difference. how many mile are on the engine? you should have your oil preasure checked hot and cold and get back to the forum with what you find. It only takes 7 psi to keep the light off, yet it takes more than 7 psi to feel the engine
I would go a step further and tell you to not drive it. Every time the light comes on you are causing internal issues.
How many miles on your engine?
How mechanical are you?
If you want some help with this besides what your mechanic is telling you, PM me your number and I'll call you right back.
By the way, a good mechanic should have known that putting Lucas in the oil to thicken it up is a bandaid not a fix.
In the future, winter you run a 5 or 10/30 oil depending on how cold it gets, in the summer 10/40 up to a 20/50 is benefical. Also never use a shop oil filter, they are cheap money makers for a shop but not good for your engine. Consider a Mobil1-301, buy one, keep it ic your truck and if you have to have someone else change your oil make sure what they add and have them use your filter.
By the way, since you are new to Rovers, go read my major service list at the top of the section and do it all including the front drive shaft rebuild or replacement before it fails and takes out your tranny.

Ok so i checked with the shop, and the first time they used 5w30, then this second time put in 20w-50, and lucas on top of it, the lucas may or may not have been necessary. The light only came on once and I shut it off right after that, no time after the first time when I was on my way to out of town, has the light come on again. It has 114000 miles on the engine. Could the 5w30 had caused the light to come on since it was a bit hot yesterday?
Sure that could cause it, but do you want to risk your engine on our feed back or go get the oil pressures checked. It has to be done stone cold at idle and 2000 RPM's and again when warm at idle and 2000 RPM's.
Go leave it over night at a shop and have it done the way I mentioned then get back to us with the 4 sets of numbers.
