Default oil pressure numbers

cold @ idle - 42-45
cold @ 2000 - 48-49

hot @ idle 8- 10
hot @ 2000 44-46

oil light is not on. no bad engine noises. slight intermittant lifter tick. truck has 120000 on it and it is an 03 within the range but i do not believe the pump has ever been replaced. what would be causing the psi to be so low at idle but ok at 2000? i am running rotella 15w40. thanks in advance everyone

Your pump is starting to show its age. The difference between hot and cold at idle is normal.
My only concern is the hot idle number, 6 to 8 and you are about to get into trouble.

How do you check your oil pressure? I'd like to monitor mine.

The rave manual cals for 10 psi @ idle min. (hot or cold)
50 psi cold @2000 (relief opens @ 50psi)
The idiot lite makes @ 3.5 -- 6 psi

So, you're not in terrible shape.

You can do whatever you want, the factory overhaul manual shows your numbers are ok.
I suggest you download the rave cd in my sig, as it is complete - you'll find any thing you want and more than you need.

I started mechanics in 1959, it saddens me to see people change parts unnecessarilly
as they try to chase down a problem.

Most of us here have sorted out nearly anything you'll encounter and enjoy sharing.

It's up to you to determine what route you take.

If you re-read the responses to your post, take the average.

The "this happened to me" stuff is nice, but if it doesn't offer sound advice, it's just clutter.

It's my understanding that the oil pump issue is a result of alignment dowels IN THE ENGINE BLOCK were misaligned, the factory tightening of the timing cover ***'y stresses the housing, possibly resulting in cracking later.

I don't know if it's always inevitible, but there is no factory repair outside of replacing the block or engine.
oil pump gears won't resolve it. - a complete oil pump housing may/may not forestall it if it's going to happen to yours

there's something to the fact yours has made it this far.

please keep us posted

thanks greg, ive already downloaded the rave and its een a big help so far. i know that for the 03s with the misaligned dowels the only fix is a new block. but i was wondering if mine has made it this far and the gears are just worn should i just change the gears or the whole cover. i know that the numbers are within "ok" range but iv seen some way better numbers. im jus wondering all this just in case the numbers start sliding a little more. maybe catch it before it damages the cover?
thanks

As I posted earlier, I would be concerned and as mentioned, you have a ways to go before it does cause problems. Check it in another year and if it drops any more then consider a pump kit.
Just out of curiosity, what weight oil are you using?
