Default Oil Pressure Warning

Hi fellas,

Greetings from downunder. Melbourne Australia to be precise. I have an issue you may be able to assist me with before I mortgage the farm and drop the car into a dealer. I have a 98 (Series 1 - last of) Auto V8 Discovery with about 200,000 kilometers on the clock. On a recent 2,000 k interstate tour, towards the end, I got the oil pressure light coming on intermittently and after stopping for a few minutes, I could proceed for another few kays or so before it happened again. Upon stopping and returning to idle, it was eviodent the oil wasn't getting to the top end (bucket of marbles sound). I did the right thing and had the car transported to home base where it now resides waiting for me to make it better again.

Any suggestions as to the cause of this and what steps I should take? I do my own servicing and am not afraid of a spanner.

Cheers,

TONY.

Tony,
Did you have a chance to get your truck into the shop yet? Curious to hear what they find.

Yep. They dropped the pan and reckon the pick-up was clogged. "A good soak should fix it" they said. We shall see ......

Thought that was going to be the case, make sure you flush it again soon cause there is probably more crap left up high in the engine. Oh and next time use only 2 quarts of ATF
Take care,
Mike

What the hell is a quart anyway? We had metric forced upon us back in the seventies.

Got a call from the shop today ... put it back together and still no oil pressure. "How much further do you want us to go?" was the question.

Well, it'd be nice if I could drive it sometime soon ... what'll she cost?

"Dunno".

OK then, just put a new engine in and be done with it.

"Sure, be ready Thursday"

Great, the family won't need food for a few months ...

F**king cars.

Tony,
Did they do a pressure test from the oil pump? Should do that first cause if it is down there it most likely will be you only problem.

Will let you know tomorrow. Could probably spend five and a half grand on something more sensible.

Sorry to hear about your trouble.
Sounds like whoever had the LR before you never changed the oil.

if the noise stopped after you cleaned the sump, and pump, check the sending unit. it may be faulty. hope it helps. gotta love a rover.
