Oil Recommendation

Oil Recommendation
I am starting to perform my own maint. and would like to know if there is a recommended oil for my '04 Disco HSE. I was looking at using a 10w30 synthetic by Castrol. Any thoughts on the subject?
I also have a similar post for my '03 Range Rover.
Thanks in advance for the replies.

RE: Oil Recommendation
Not to Hijack thread, but...
While we are on the subject of Synthetic Oil..
What would you recomend for a 94 Discovery with 46,000 miles
In Oklahoma USA where I live the temp in Winter will rarely drop below 10 degrees Farenheit
In Summer temps hover around 100 degrees Farenheit

i prefer the Amsoil 10-40.
it specifies right on the bottle for use in flat tappet engines which the rover is,,,

But what in the formulation makes it specifically good for flap tappet engines? Does that mean it is poor for other types of valvetrains?

no no not at all,,, it just means it will work on engines that are based on a design that is older then the great wall like our engines. most engines today are of the overhead cam design, but the flat tappet pushrod engine that the disco engine is based on is ancient.

RE: Oil Recommendation
The owner's manual list a range of outside temps that each oil weight is good for. 5w40 gives the widest temperature range so that is what I use. Of course with synthetics everything gets a little skewed by the fact that synthetics don't act quite the same as conventional oils in the cold. I ran 15w40 synthetic in my Dodge diesel even in Alaska winters with no problems.
Our engines may be old technology but it is tried and true technology. Just wish they could have got more power out of the old technology. I saw a Defender with a supercharger on its 4.0 V8 and it got me thinking whether a kit like that is available for the Disco.

RE: Oil Recommendation
As for the weight of the oil, don't use what we may use but what the owners manual recomends for your engine in the temp. range where you live.
I use 2 different weights, 5W/30 in the winter and 10W/40 in the warmer months. When I lived in California, year around, I always ran a 20W/50, so read your manual and be safe.
