Default oil vis confusion

just bought an '00 disco w 100k miles and im planning to do the oil and filter, but im getting mixed answers.

guy at disco dealership when i went in to get an exhuast gasket at the parts counter said they use 5-30 or 5-40 and summer 10-40. autozones guide in the store came up 5-30 winter and 10-40 summer.

anyone give me a hand? i live at sea level in NJ, its about 25F at its coldest overnight right now and getting to the upper 40's, but summer is just around the corner and it gets about 60 overnight and 75-95F day, with few days above 100F.

There is a thread from yesterday on this topic with a couple dozen replies....also try searching the forum and looking at the Rave service manual which has recommendations you can use as a baseline.

Will be about 15 tonight with a 0 windchill in NJ. I'm not complaining... going skiing again tomorrow night. I'll keep the snow around as much as possible. As far as the oil, the manual says 5W40 for those temps. 10W40 should be fine too. I have been experimenting with some different oils the past month or so. I think either 5W40 or 10W40 should be fine. You won't see a big difference either way. Advance had M1 on sale. 5 qts with the M1 filter for $32. You could buy two of the deals and have the spare filter for next time it is on sale or for when you find a gallon jug

Default Probably close by so...

Im in Delaware, I run Rotella 5w40 in the winter and 10w40 in summer. Last year I ran the 5w30 at the end of summer and into fall but it didn't seem to run real well. Just my preference but I've tried Castrol syntech, Mobil and regular conv oil and she seems to like the Rotella the best.

Alot of opinions on this website about oil so just do a search.
