Default OK to drop front drive shaft?

My '99 Disco II I handed down to my son has eaten another front U Joint.

I'm travelling a lot right now and am curious if I can just drop the front driveshaft until I have time to rebuild it.

I've dropped the front drive shaft on previous 4X4s ('72 Bronco, '80 Land Cruiser), but they didn't have all of the bells and whistles the newer Disco II has.

Thought I'd check in with the Disco Gurus before I did anything.

Thanks!

You can but you HAVE to lock the center diff first. You can do a quick search on here if you don't know how to lock it. I've put close to 1,200 miles on my 99 without the front shaft, but like I said you HAVE to lock the diff or you wont make it anywhere.

Dropped the front shaft and locked the CDL. Disco is driving.

Here's another question. The U Joint on the front end of the Hookes completely let loose and really mangled the ears on one end of the Hookes.

Am I better off waiting and buying an aftermarket front shaft, or find someone parting out a DII and grab the front shaft (or at least the Hookes) and install new U Joints?

Aftermarket is less trouble, just plug and play, and you can grease the centering ball.

OE will be cheaper even after a rebuild.

Consider a new, better designed/built front shaft from either British Parts of Utah or Great Basins Rovers.
What is your son doing to destroy his front shafts, does he ever grease them?

Go aftermarket. I've about decided the stock ones aren't made well enough to bother rebuilding. Some may disagree with that, but the increased dependability and peace of mind of the aftermarket ones is worth the extra money to me.

Make sure you check and make sure the roto flex is not cracked and tell your son to keep his foot out of the gas.
