How long can ya go if ya change yer head gasket (and liner wasn't dropped)? What seems to be "average" mileage (if there is such a thing) before it'll go again?

Thanks,

Mark

I have 75k since they were replaced and still running fine, and the head were never decked.

I have 90K on mine and leak free! Knocked on wood, sacrificed a Ford, and grabbed my lucky rabbits foot since I just said that.

I think the key is keeping the temps in check, changing the fluids regularly. Who knows, you may have to sacrifice a ford, jeep or better yet a "smart car"(i would rather have 13 mpg, than ride in a sardine can)

I've had good luck to date, with one job now posting 60,000 miles. I think the newer gaskets are more reliable than the original, but as others note, temperature seems to be the key, with proper system maintenance most important. I also credit high octane fuel, as cheap gas burns faster and will push chamber pressures well over the limit.

My RRC is still on it's original Headgaskets at 250K.

My friend and mechanic reckons 100K between HG jobs is a fairly good rule of thumb for the newer Bosch motors

Just had my head gaskets, upper plenum gaskets, and a couple other cooling items replaced(hoses, T stat, . Mine had about 89,000 miles. There were coolant leaks for a few thousand miles and I was filling up the coolant about every 5 weeks.
…..Now SES light is on again….

My rover came with a new shortblock that was installed by a dealership. They put the old heads on the new block. I was told by a well respected rover guy that new the history of the truck very well that it was assembled by "one of the best mechanics in the industry." They were seeping coolant within 45,000 miles. The engine never got hot.

From everything I've read, the order of longevity is: head gaskets done by the owner which seem to last a long time, then you get the indy head gaskets, then you get the dealership gaskets. It's the inverse of the cost.
