Default open port - What is this for ???

I pulled the image from the internet, but its the same as what I see under my 2000 Discovery. Anyone know what this port is used for, why it has two threaded holes on either side, and why it is not being used for anything???

Anyone know what the open (unused port with two threaded holes on either side is for...and why they don't use it on a 2000 Disc., and likely others models as well?

On a GEMS setup that is where the oil pickup tube would mount if I'm not mistaken. Bosch engines = pickup tube runs to the front cover.

Thank you...I appreciate the response. The last time I dropped the pan was 2011 and I was like..."did I leave something out last time I put it back together".
I have the front cover back on (new timing chain/gears, oil pump)..and now its time for the oil pan to mount, fill fluids and start the engine.
