Had a radiator hose blow off today, (clamp was not tight) and it got up to 236 on the scan gauge before I got her turned off. Anyway put the hose back on an refilled and bleed system. all is good with the coolant level but now the engine has a tick to it.

What have I done????

There aren't enough "engine ticking" threads on here for you to get an idea of what you did?

 

My guess is you over heated your engine.

 

Change your oil, it got baked and is now no good.
I recommend Shell Rotella 15w-40, it takes lots of abuse really really well.

Then, if it still ticks, plan on checking the oil pump pressure and the entire valve train. If you have any questions on that, send me your number and I'll walk you thru.
Do not continue to drive it if the noise does not go away.

 

Spike555 was right I changed the oil to Amsoils 10w40 with Zinc and the ticking is completely gone. However now I have the slight knock after the truck reaches normal operating temp (195) it is not however completely consistent with the rpms. It seems to follow behind them a little, if that makes sense??

I read in one the engine ticking threads that the fan on the front of the engine may be causing this? I have listened to it and it is most noticeable with my ear on the front grill. I have not gotten underneath it yet but can also hear it alot at a drive thru or when I park next to a wall.

Anyway like I said it only happens when it is hot, purrs like a kitten until then but very annoying when hot.

 

Remove the belt from the engine once it is warm and starts making the noise, then start the engine back up and see if the noise is still there.
If yes keep looking, check the cat's to see if they rattle, when they start to go bad thats why they do and it can sound like rod knock.
If the noise goes away after you remove the belt then shut the engine back off and start spinning pulleys by hand.
When my original alternator went bad it sounded like a sever rod knock, but it was the bearings inside the alt that were making the noise.

 

checked the oil pressure and it is about 20 psi at warm idle and 50 psi on the move.

I also got under it today and it sounds like it is coming from the lower back of the engine where the tranny connects to it. might be the cats they are original (93000 miles.) and it comes and goes.

 

mine did the same..engine now in garage in pieces...my cam bearings as well as rod bearings where shot... hope thats not the case....use to tick like a diesel at operating temp...
