My 99 discoII is overheating. I was losing a little water/coolant at first, then I would refill it and it would be fine. Now it over heats all the time. Does anybody have any suggestions. I do not know weather it is the thermostat,the water pump or a head gasket. Any help would be appreciated.

Yes, stop driving it before you drop a sleeve and need a new engine.
What have you done to find the leak?

 

All I know is as soon as you notice its overheating you need to pull over and stop driving it. It will tear up your engine, or even kill it if you continue to drive it. Disco Mike or someone will chime in with what you need to do/what it is, but I just wanted to get that out there!

 

The only place I have found any leaking was back out the resevoir averflow tube.

Start the trk and stand by the exhaust and see if it smells sweet. If it does you have a leaking head gasket.

 

Shawn, if you haven't toasted the engine yet, you need to get real serious about find the leak
How mechanical are you?

 

I am not that mechanically inclined. I change my own oil and check my own fluids, I changed transfer cases with some help. The coolant system is something I know little about. I think the engine is alright it was still running strong and I didn't get it hot. I pay close attention to the temp gauge and shut it off before it got to the the red.

Do not drive it, for any reason till you can set up an appointment to get it into a shop, believe me you can loose an engine over this and I don't think it would be good for you to do anything yourself except to fill the coolant bottle to the very top.

 

Thanks Disco Mike. I talked to a shop they said it was going to run me about $1600 to do all the gaskets from the head gasket up. Does this sound right? I figure if I am going to pay someone to tear it down I will do the water pump thermostat and fan clutch.

Until some one does a coolant pressure test, it is not wise to be quoting prices for something thqat may or may not be needed.
If the head gasket are bad, price is pretty good.
