Overheating issue

Overheating issue
I have a 1999 D2. Here’s what’s happened so far.
I was off roading and the entire top of the thermostat ripped off. Blowing all the coolant out. Didn’t really have a choice due to not being in cell reception. Had to jury rig it and drive it to the trail head 8 miles away.
Since then it was taking about 1/2 a reservoir of coolant a day. Thought it was a coolant bleed issue. It wasn’t. It also overheated once going up a steep grade. I wrote it off as running straight water.
Yesterday it overheated again. I was able to get it home. But all the water seems to of blown out.
My question is
1) Did I blow the head gaskets?
2) Did I blow the block.
and how do I tell which one I did?

Did you replace thermostat?
Are you getting any misfire codes?
Did it overheat when the thermostat blew apart or did you catch it before that happen?
My stats top opening/port to manifold cracked off once, clean, had enough left to slide hose back on and drive six hundred miles home...but l caught it before it overheated...saw steam and got pulled over...no permanent damage.
I'd check cooling system for exhaust gases before l jumped to conclusions about anything. You could have a bad cap, over-pressuring system...do investigative work forst...not head gaskets first.

Pretty sure it’s not a bad cap. It’s a new cap that’s a year old.
