I've only seen one do that and it was the nearly 20 year old OEM unit with what I would describe as mud/clay packed into the bottom of it (I really think it was dexcool/green coolant debris/goo). It refused to open, but that is the only one I've ever seen in all my years of working on LR's. D2 came to me after the customer had just spent nearly 2k on a HG job. The shop replaced the HG's, but failed to replace the clogged thermostat/radiator which was the cause of the HG's going out in the first place! They drove it home, and the next day it overheated on them and it was towed to me. I found the cooling system in poor shape, then I found the nasty OEM thermostat staring me in the face and I had a feeling that had something to do with it, and once I removed the lower coolant hose on the radiator it was obvious what the problem was. Slapped in a Britpart 78C 180F thermostat, and a 65.00 Ebay radiator after I flushed that system like a mad man and it was in the 193F to 206F range vs 215-225F (not at idle or in traffic). I also recommended the Dorman 620-112 fan blade, and Hayden 2991 fan clutch which they later had me install. They never had anymore issues with the cooling system after that. I'm just glad the shop actually did the HG decently.

Whenever I see an OEM creme colored thermostat I cringe, and when I see one that's more orange than creme I know without a doubt that LR has been running way way way to hot, and to expect HG, slipped sleeves, or a crack in the block. I've also seen the OEM T's turn a light tan/orange = also another sign she's running way to hot. The 03-04's without oil coolers are just so asking for trouble because if you think the coolant temp is hot just imagine how hot that oil is.

i know its the stat because now it’s working fine
with my old Atlantic British stat.
Funny thing is I drove a 3 hour trip this morning with no issues
I’m thinking it just didn’t open and somehow it got stuck.

Have you tried to replicate the failure in a pot of water on the stove?

Actually it's the perfect opportunity to check out your camp stove setup...

I've never thought of a darn camp stove (good idea as I could just put one in the shop lol)! Always just tell the wife excuse me while I check something lol. She normally looks over my shoulder and just laughs most of the time.

Last time I tested 3 Thermostats, 2 were supposedly 180's and one was an old OEM thermostat from 03/04. The 180F's opened well past 190F, while the OEM old unit actually opened like at 188/190F. Proved my point the no name 82C stamped units are total garbage.

Still to date have I had a Britpart 78C stamped thermostat come back into my shop with issues. However after I told a lot of friends/customers about em and they ordered from a certain vendor I was swamped with issues. That's what brought on the thermostat boil and it proved my point. The vendor was no longer selling the same product! I then was in a pinch and went with the 180F Unit from Auto Zone (motorad unit which about 80% are made by nowadays anyway) and it opened perfectly. I installed those into the D2's with issues with the knock off no name wonders, and problems went away.

Good news is bearmach refunded me the full amount including shipping
I will continue doing business with them as they do have good pricing and shipping.
Unlike lucky 8 that couldn’t care less when I bought their ****ty thermostat and was more like a oem

Now for my inline mod coming soon. Done with these plastic things.
