Default Parts truck ...

I found a 96 Discovery in a local bulletinboard with 129k miles for $1000.00 ... has a leaking head gasket. My first thought was to buy it and replace the head gasket (gotta be easy, right?) and the second thought was to buy it and part it out. I looked up the NADA value and it had $3500 - $5000 for price range. Of course this would depend on the shape of the rest of the vehicle, but assuming everything was OK does this sound like a stretch? I have never replaced a head gasket but am pretty handy and know how to read and implement instructions from manuals so ... whaddya think?

Thanks,
Mark

I just did the same thing, I bought a 96 disco that supposedly just needed head gaskets. Turned out when it overheated it dropped a sleeve so now I need a whole new motor($1500-$2000 for a used one). The headgasketwas not a tough project but I would see if a leak down test could be done before you buy it to make sure that the motor is still good.

Don't buy a used Rover with the plans of fixing it up and making money on it. Even the best of us won't tackle that.

Yeah, prob right ... if I needed a cheap extra vehicle it would be one thing, but making money on it is probably a losing battle! Thanks for the sanity check ... I'll stick to keeping mine running.

Buy it and part it out, it wont be worth fixing it. But seriously, you can make alot more than $1000 if you work hard at parting it out. If you think about it, its not that hard to do, just post it on here, and locally and you will make a hefty profit. GO FOR IT!
