PCM Powertrain Control Module

PCM Powertrain Control Module
Have a 2001 Discovery II which was in shop for body repairs when supposedly the PCM went bad (" burnt up"). LR Dealer is saying it needs to be replaced and has to be a new part specifically programmed to this car. (Cost is $2200)
Anyone know if this is true? Can a used PCM be bought and reprogrammed?
Also does anyone know if there is a difference between the PCM and the ECM (engine control module)?
Much thanks for resposes!

Odd, that it puked while it was there.
Was there any problem prior? If it was going, you'd have at least had check engine light, I would imagine.
It may be semantics, I've understood PCM= powertrain control module & ECM= engine control module.
What kind of body damage?
I've not heard of ECU or PCM burning up, usually they fail because of corrosion to contacts, which generally can be cleaned.
I'm a cynic, I'd have a good independant mech look at it, or at least tell the dealer that.
let us know how it goes, please
luck,greg

You can buy a guaranteed used one for $450 from, http://www.roverlandparts.com/discov...ne-ecus-1.aspx
and the dealer can program it to your car using the Test-Book.

PCM update!
Whew! It has been a long 6 weeks! I followed DiscoMike and Greg advice on finding an independent mechanic (had to have the car towed there and back!) but they identified that the ECU was burnt up and it appeared that it was because of some welding on the vehicle. European Dives replaced the ECU and got her running again.
But alas that is not the end of story...dealership is reimbursing for costs of used ECU and towing, however after finally getting her back...I leave the dealership and the check engine light comes on!! I did not return to the dealer, but had it checked out.
P0171 and P0174 were the codes. I'm a little worried about these. It could be because the car had sat for about four months without being driven, but it could be because of the replaced ECU. Should I be worried? Or is it just oxygen sensors that are due to be replaced. Runs fine btw! Any recommendations?
