Penzoil Platinum or Mobile 1?

Pennzoil premium has a type III basestock, that is a highly processed/purified dino oil (alleged as are many of the mobil 1 base stocks). Pennzoil premium has a fair amount of ZDDP and detergents as do most mobil 1 oils. All mobil 1 oils are not created equally. The high mileage oils have conditioners and extra detergents to clean out older engines/valve trains and condition seals. The extended protection mobil 1 oils have extra zddp and moly for extended oil change intervals (these are good for our flat tappet engines). The mobile 0w-20, 0w-30, 0w-40 and 15W-50 are the mobil 1 oils that are allegedly the "true synthetics" (type IV and V basestocks) of the mobil 1 lineup (among others). The 15W-50 though thick is great for our engines as it has really high levels of zddp and moly.
The recommended mobil 1 oils according to the manual for our trucks would be the 5W-40 or 10W-40 HM or EP. Pennzoil platinum would be 5W-30. If you want a truly affordable excellent oil for year round in our engines is Shell Rotella 5W-40 synthetic. It is a heavy duty engine oil for diesel engines but is rated for gasoline engines with cats also. It is available at Walmart for $20 gallon. You can also use the dino Rotella 15W-40 and that is only $27 for 3 gallons.
On a side note there is a pennzoil premium rebate for $15 on the 5 quart jug that is $20 at Walmart. So you get it for $1 per quart. I use mobil 1 15w-50 in the summer and Rotella 5W-40 in the winter.
