Default Pinging / Ticking

Started to happen rather infrequently now it's a constant ping-tick during acceleration only. Does not ping-tick in idle or reving in park.

I'm thinking belt or tension pulley due to it only happening when force is put on the engine.

Any reasonable guesses?

Using something other than top tier premium fuel?

You can't put in Regular.
You can't put in Midgrade. Come on now.
Premium.
This is a German re-engineered intake and Bosch ECU.
Wants premium like a BMW.

There is also A KNOCK Sensor. You should get a code if that is not working.
That knock sensor saves your engine when you get pings by retarding the timing.

What happens when you get a lot of pinging -
Blown head gaskets.

These engines get the puffa puffa sound with air coming out the side of the engine from the crown on the head gasket getting burned away by pinging.

A few things spring to mind. Pinking due to cheap low grade fuel or ignition timing not exact or possibly slipping bore liner(s). Can you post an audio of the problem/noise?

I'm not sure where you are getting your conclusions but I use 93, it's the best we get out here and always from Shell.

I will say this all started after an oil change, using premium synthetic mobil 1. 10w 30.

That oil weight could be your problem - these trucks require 40w oil when ambient temps are greater then 90ish F. I think it's in the manual somewhere, but I have seen a graph showing oil weights and ambient temps, and in most environments 30w is too thin for summer use.

I personally run M1 5w-40 Turbo Diesel Truck oil year round, but many run Rotella T6.

Unless you live in Alaska, you need to swap that oil for a heavier weight.

I was getting valve ticks when I used Mobil-1 synthetic. My LR shop buddy advised using organic/diesel oil. He commented the older push-rod design in our Disco engine does not do well with the higher viscous nature of synthetic oil. I switched to Rotella 15W40 and the ticks have gone away.

Ok, I'm gonna give this a try, funny thing is I've had multiple people tell me that our Engines run too rich for 40-

Question for both; were ticks happening at idle and rev in park or only when in gear with accelerator- if you can remember it'd be a great help.

My valve ticks (with Mobil-1 syn) were coming on at idle. It went away after the engine was warmed up or being driven.

The ticks at idle went away after switching to Rotella.

Did the Rotella and still have this high pitched ting- again only on acceleration in drive/reverse. Not that apparent if at all while reving in neutral or park.
