Platinum +4 plugs
Hey all
what is the significance of the Platinum + plugs? I'm guessing it's a means (to somewhat come close) to index the plug fire at all the cylinders? I find it interesting (since they started with the split fire) that electricity ALWAYS takes the path of LEAST resistance = if a plug has a hundred arc points, every time it fires it will only have a single line of fire leaving the other 99 (3) untouched that time. Thats why I'm thinking its an indexing thing? Of course better materials will account for some improvements.
just curious

Actually in 1959 the then Buick engine came out with a standard copper core A/C Delco plug and over the years and with Rover using the engine for awhile, they contracted with Champion for their Platinum plugs.
The Plus 4 as well as most of the Iridum plugs are just improvemnted plugs giving more spark distribution and lasting longer.
I ran 67,000 on my last set of Plus 4's with some additional low end torques as a side benefit.

I have a set of Magnecor 8mm wires and Bosch Platinum +4s on the way. Can't wait to get them installed. My tryck is running great but decided to do it while I had the money. Well, I really didn't have the money but decided to do plugs and wires anyway. Can't wait to see if they make any difference.
I'm guessing the +4 is not considered a "hot plug" for performance vehicles? I've heard (does not make it so) that some of these will pit/burn through pistons - anybody experiencing any of that
What most of my post boil down to is - I'm making a list of things to change, like most people I'm looking to get the best bang for the buck so to speak.
Thanks for everyones help!

I have used the Plus 4's in my last 3 vehicles over the years with good results. The one thing I have found is, with good wires, you will generate more low end torque, and biy a Disco can sure use that.
Talked to Jeff at JC's Rover today when I went back about a ticking sound from the engine. We got talking about plugs and wires and he recommended either a standard copper plug or the Bosch double platinums with a good set of wires. He went on a long rant about how plugs work and how 4 electrodes don't provide any advantages. I can't really remember all his reasons but I found it interesting that he was so against them. I've decided that since I have already ordered them I'll put them in and see how they work. If they cause problems I'll follow Jeff's recommendations.
I'm sure someone is going to ask so I'll answer it. The ticking sound was a loose water pump pulley. I took it over to JC's and Jeff fixed it right away.

That was pretty much my thought on the matter. Since I have already ordered the plugs I'll give them a try. If they cause problems I'll pull them out and follow Jeff's recommendation. I'm still learning what my Rover likes and dislikes so I'll just have to go with the try and see method on this one.
I agree that Jeff is a great mechanic and definitely wants to keep his customers happy.
