Please discuss this Discovery II......TDI Diesel
#11
there are two reasons to go 300TDI in the US that i've been able to come up with.
1. Diesels are cool, they're more efficient, have fantastic torque etc etc
2. The Rover V8 has a terrible reputation for reliability in recent years, heck even Pixar took a swipe at the RV8 in "Cars 2", calling it the most unreliable engine ever made Regardless of whether its really "that bad", craigslist is full of Disco's with blown headgaskets for dirt cheap. I'm getting my engine rebuilt just so that i can "trust" it. Compared to the 300TDI and even the TD5, the RV8 is seen as a real weak link in the chain for the NAS Rovers.

I saw this one during my weekly perusal of eBay Land Rovers. The concept is kind of cool, but the legality of this thing is sketchy at the best. And I can't really get around that asking price. That's bordering on robbery.
And I didn't really like the way the thing was done. Too tall for me. Loses it's practicality when that happens, and that's one of the things I love about the Disco. It's useful. Looks more like this guy wanted to do up a diesel pickup and got stuck with a DII.

How many miles are they driving a year?
I spent ~$2600 in fuel for my Rover last year.
Doing rough numbers, 12,000 miles a year, $4.05/gal for diesel, thats ~$2000/yr.
Saving $600/yr and assuming the purchase price of $8000 thats 13.5 years to pay for the truck.
Lets assume converting my truck could be done for $5000, that would still take 8.5 years to break even.
Right now, here premium petrol is $3.74/gal, diesel is $4.05/gal, diesel is always more than petrol, always.

you are not calculating it correctly.the 300tdi gives more than double the mpg.end of.you would save around 1500 per year at those miles you are quoting.for my miles, driving kids to and from hockey 5 nights per week plus to and from work it is a no brainer.i have a 300 tdi in my drive along with a 2000 disco 2 v8 a comparison is easy for me

Here is exactly my MPG and what I spent last year on fuel.
I still dont see the tdi conversion paying off, at least not for me anyway.

We had only had the van a few months, so the numbers are skewed, mine are one years worth.
I never run to empty unless on a trip, I fill both cars once a week, mine on Fri on the way home from work, hers on Sat as we are running errands and such.
The Sedona weighs more than the Rover, right now we are averaging 14.9mpg with the van, 12.6 with the Rover, but both of those numbers will rise as summer and warmer weather hits.
I reset my app at the first fill up of the year and start from scratch with both cars, always top off, always put it in the app.
My wife will bring home a receipt with the miles written on it if she put gas in the van so I can enter it into the app.
