Mine did the same thing and I got a rebuilt power steering pump and that was the cure. Got mine from O'Reileys or Advance Auto. I thought it was the hose but it was the pump.
Has your steering pump been moaning?

It only started moaning when all the fluid was gone

Got same problem, seems like the metal tube that goes around under the radiator was leaking somewhere. Im just wondering if that can be cut shorter or it has to loop all the way to the other end of the radiator and back. Is that something to cool the fluid as well? Mine just have too long tubing. 04 disco too.

Can the lines not be cut and replaced with brass and a couple of compression fittings?

I've seen those lines before but only with the radiator out.

That loop serves as a cooler, cut the loop out and get a cheap cooler and plumb it in.

It's not advisable to use compression fittings on the high pressure line. Cut out the bad section of tube and braze in new tube.

The "extra" length of line running under the radiator acts as the power steering cooler. I would advise against cutting it short.

Like Joemomma mentioned. You could always cut it, and add an external cooler.
