Grabbed some cutable filter material from Home Depot (not a new idea). As I was putting it in, I realized the clips were not sufficient to hold the filter in place. So I trimmed up some of the filter frame to fit and snapped it in place. Seems like it does a more secure job holding the filter in place.
Thanks for posting, my original filter has long since disintegrated to dust and I have a few clips missing. I shudder to think how much stuff has been sucked in to my blower motor since the last time I cleaned it out. Might have to implement this ASAP after I find a way to replace the missing clips somehow (probably 3D print them).
I may have to give that a try! Mine is cracked in a few more places than yours, but it might still work. Yours looks good after the polishing! I also learned about the dash hold down kit via your links which I hadn't seen before and will have to give a go in the future.

Anytime I go to a junked Disco, I take clips. See if any yards have a disco lying around in your area.
$12 for this filter material and it can be had at any Walmart, Lowes or Home Depot. Also, the $12 buys you a full year's worth of filter material. But you're right - not so much a cost issue - more of a convenience item.
