new member here! I have been reading the forums here and there and finally been on a journey to find a Discovery 2.

I came across this listing which sounds like it’s a good deal but maybe not? I would love everyone’s opinion.

2002 Discovery -100k Miles
Price: $5000 possible to be haggled down to $4000

according to seller:
>new headliner
>new head gasket
>passenger side window will not go down and up (easy fix)
>properly and the front sunroof is not working (easy fix)
>Keys have to be reprogrammed
>three amigo lights come off and on I’m not entirely sure why you turn the car on and Off and then back on they are gone.

from CarFax:
>Car retail value - $10k
>3 Accidents
> Great service record: regular maintenance being done, and replaced
>front driveshaft was replaced 10 years ago

have an appointment for a PPI this Monday.

I can do also do DIY stuff which is also why I’m looking at this car. Please give me your input on this car

price isn't terrible. It would come down to rust, water damage, and what kind of accidents (3 seems high). Condition of interior should be pretty solid for that price imo not perfect but all pieces there and functioning.

 

Thanks for the reply. Seems like it’s normal rust for a 20 year old car, interior looks really clean, and accidents seem minor from what carfax is saying Exterior might need work but nothing major. Will be able to check it out in detail tomorrow.

 

For me it's all about Rust, paint, engine, transmission and transfer case. If all of those are good then get it. Everything else can be repaired/replaced relative easily and not too much expense if you do it yourself.

 

Whats "normal rust for a 20 year old car" look like? With a D2 this could be catastrophic. Send a picture if you can. Depending on where it spent its life it could be simple surface rust or ready to break in half.

Some of the pictures are just black, but I don’t see anything worth worrying about there.

 

I think that frame looks good, but I would certainly clean it up, prep is as soon as I owned it.
Seems like a very fair price, assuming the engine runs well. I would run it for a while and pay attention to the operating temperatures. I would probably do a test for exhaust gas in the coolant.

Your right, everything else is cheap.

 

you'll want to clean it up, treat it, and paint it, but that rust underneath looks fine and just surface level.
