Default Power loss uphill

Hello everyone, I am hoping to get some answers here but I have been experiencing power loss when going uphill (rather steep!). If I want to maintain 80km per hour speed uphill - when the engine is at 3000rpm it drops to 2700-2800rpm. If I continue to accelerate I goes to 3000rpm again but drops right away to 2700-2800rpm. Eventually I keep the engine at 2500rpm and up it goes more slowly of course. On flat ground there are no problems at all even at 110km (2500rpm)

Injectors? Turbo hoses? Fuel lift pump? EGR or other sensors?

Land Rover Discovery - 300tdi - 1998 - automatic - 190.000 km.

Thanks in advance.

Mr. Tortoise

Sounds like the torque converter is locking up when it shouldn't be. Not too many of us have experience with the tdi engines, at least I don't think.

Well, I had no clue whatsoever that this forum was petrol/V8 engines only.

But thanks anyway for your response!

They dont sell the diesel here in the US.
Your RPMs climb when the transmission down shifts, then once the truck slows down more it down shifts again.
Look for loose hose clamps on the intercooler and turbo, also replace the fuel filter.
Check the air filter and see if it is dirty.
You might want to run some injector cleaner through it too.

dont kno much about diesel's but sounds like it might be your torque converter.... but could just be lack of power... try to manually downshift see if thats works its what i do when i go up steep grades and the rover acts like a lard a$$

Check the bladder in the vacum pump may not be maintaining vacum under heavy load.

Default Petrol with same problem!

Sorry but I need to resurrect this thread because Ive been having similar problems with my petrol 04 DII. Every time I travel up a long steep hill I feel a sudden lose of power and the speeds decreases despite me maintaining steady consistent pressure on the gas pedal. The rpm's drop down then I have to add more pressure to the gas pedal (slightly) then the engine revs up a deal high then the engine speeds up then quickly looses power again. Not sure if this is normal considering the weight of the vehicle and the added stress of climbing a steep hill.

My air filter is like new, recent oil and coolant replaced, diffs flushed, super premium fuel used and monthly fuel injector cleaner added. Only thing I can think of is a bad fuel filter? But on level roads I have no problem maintaining speed and no loss of power. Ive read that the DII can clib hills easier than the D1 so this loss of power makes me wonder.

It's because it's heavy, slow, and the engine is a joke. Nothing wrong with the truck.
