I've seen a couple methods posted for changing the power steering fluid out on my rig. What's the best method?

Buy 4 quarts of p/s fluid and some form of fluid pump, suck all the fluid from the reservor, refill it, start the engine do 2 full turns left and right, turn the engine off and suck the fluid out. Do that 3 times then fill and top of the bottle to the proper level and you are done.

 

Remove the return line from the pump to the reservoir and stick it into a empty gallon jug.
Have your wife start the truck and turn the steering wheel from lock to lock while you keep the reservoir full of new fresh fluid.
Once all the fluid comes out as clean as what you are putting in you are done.
Put it all back together and top off as needed.
Have more than one empty jug handy just in case.

 

i take it this process is the same for a D1 except with ATF?

 

yup. just make sure that if you do it Spike's way to not let it run dry. You will burn up the pump.

 

And need to bleed the pump and gear box, what a pain.

 

You wont need to bleed the pump because you will be keeping the resivour full while doing this, and like OKDGuy said, do NOT let the pump run dry.
Have a friend start the truck while you keep the resevoir full of fresh ATF.
It will only take a few minutes this way.

 

I think Mike was just adding to my post... as in you will burn up the pump and need to bleed everything. It is kind of a pain.

 

I bled from the bleed screw on the pump while keeping the reservoir full with success. But you need to remove the airbox cover and the section of intake before the MAF sensor to gain access which isn't a big deal.
After I'm all done I did notice the back side of the reservoir holds P/S fluid but with no hose connected. I think that is for SLS equiped vehicles? If I were to do it over again I'd disconnect the reservoir from its bracket and empty the old fluid out of the back side of the reservoir also while I'm at it to get a more complete flush.
