Default Power steering issue

Hi there,
So I had a loud whining noise every time I touched my steering wheel (and it got worse over a week or so). So after scrounging the forum, it was apparent I had an issue with my power steering pump. I ordered a new power steering pump and replaced it this past weekend. I emptied the old PAS fluid and replaced it with new fluid. After everything was back together, I bled the system as specified in the manual. But unfortunately the noise still exists. It's not as bad as it was and if I don't touch the wheel, it's quiet. I used a stethoscope and determined that the noise is indeed coming from the new pump.
So my question - is it possible I was sold a bad pump? I purchased the replacement from PartsGeek.com which was recommended.

Absolutely you can buy a bad part from any supplier. Now it can sometimes be a bit of a task to bleed the power steering system, are you sure you have all the air out?

Hi silver
yeah, i had my brother turning the wheel back and forth many times and I just watched it flowing out. Though when he got the wheel all the way to the right, it wasn't flowing out nearly as hard (barely trickling out) as it did when we had the wheel all the way to the left...

thanks

Ok in your reservoir is the fluid churning or is it still?

"With engine at idle speed, and an assistant turning the steering from lock to lock, loosen bleed screw on top of steering box. Keep PAS fluid reservoir topped up and allow all air to bleed from system. When fluid from bleed screw is free of air, tighten bleed screw.

CAUTION: Do not hold steering at full lock for longer than 10 seconds."

You may have some back pressure coming from your gear box, might want to try a 1/2 bottle of Lucas p/s stop leak which is great for freeing up pressure issues.

Hi Silver
the fluid reservoir is swirling around. Before I changed it, it was frothing. So I'm assuming it's behaving as it should (no bubbles).

Hi Mike,
do i just pour that into the PAS reservoir? Would the noise still come from the pump if there was pressure in it?

thanks guys

Yes pour into reservoir, as mike said the back pressure would be fighting the pumps normal rotation thus causing noise (turbulence).

Hi Silver,
do I need to bleed the fluid again?

And what would the reasoning for the pressure in the gearbox be?

Thanks

Ad the bottle to the reservoir then turn the wheel back and fourth maybe take for a drive to get worked threw system completely. The back pressure could be from a air bubble trapped in gearbox.

When you first bled the system, how much fluid did you use? If done properly it takes a good 3 or 4 quarts to flush the pump, line and gear box.
If the Lucas is going to work well it should go into clean red, not brown fluid and will take a couple days of driving if in fact it is going to work.
