Just an aside. Perhaps some have good luck with used parts, but I have not. I have more practice than I should changing power steering pumps because of buying used.

One other thought, that growel you get might also come from a p/s hose rubbing in the frame, might want to make sure that is not the case now.

Hi Mike
the noise is more like a fast clicking or ticking noise with the new pump. When I bled the system, we used about 1.75 quarts. So you think I should bleed another quart or 2 through the system?
Also - Should this noise go away without driving the car or do you need to drive it a bit? And would it hurt to drive it?

thanks

When is the last time you opened the bleed screw and poured 3 to 4 quarts threw the reservoir until clean red fluid come out? " A flush?"

Hi silver,
i never put 3 to 4 quarts threw the system. I emptied the reservoir and put in new p/s fluid. Then bled it until the air was out of the system (or so it seemed). I kept the bleed screw open for another minute or 2 while turning the wheel back and forth (with a steady flow of fluid coming out), but this didn't cycle through more than probably 1.5 - 1.75 quarts. And the stuff coming out of the bleed screw is the new fluid I put it.

thanks

So you never even got your old brown fluid out its in there and you need to read the how to do a power steering flush.

IF the steering is working now, then it will self bleed the rest out. The air will go into the fluid tank for the power steering and ACE.

No need to bleed any further.
Make sure you have the three nuts on the power steering pump tight.
That may be the issue.

Do not make those nuts too tight. You will snap the nuts or the threads on the power steering pump itself.

The ears will crack.

Hi guys,
I did empty most of the old p/s fluid out of the reservoir and the hoses, but that's it. I then added the new p/s fluid and bled it. It does look red and doesn't have any foaming or bubbles in the reservoir (which it did before I changed the pump).
I also followed the directions and set the screws with the correct ft lbs for the 3 screws, so they should be good.
Should I drive the car for a bit and see if the noise actually goes away? I would have assumed that once the pump and fluid has been changed, there wouldn't be a noise for a time as it works it's way out... And would me driving around do any damage?
That clicking sound is pretty annoying and I really don't want to drive anyway.

How would you get the the p/s fluid out of the gearbox? would that be the standard bleed I've been doing?

thanks for the info

Are you sure the noise is coming from there and not another pulley? Maybe the idler or belt???
